up for preorder via earache :santa:

http://uswebstore.earache.com/Preorders ... -fdr-vinyl

i don't own a copy of covenant on vinyl so i'll be grabbing this, as with the rest of the FDR series it's sourced from the original masters. the altars FDR pressing was superb, i am expecting good things from this one as well.

If you guys are interested I can do a quick A/B analysis between this and a wave file and post here?

Needless to say, I don't have a direct capture of the FDR version but a YT version instead. That means of course, program compression i.e. MP3/AAC.
Having said that, these formats sound pretty good these days. You can still discern a difference albeit the difference is not night and day. It's interesting exercise
nonetheless.

that would kind of defeat the entire purpose would it not? Any volume variations -the whole point of a FDR version- are going to be washed out by youtube compression.

I have CD FDR reissues of Napalm Death's first two albums and the difference with youtube rips of old presses (which should also be FDR) is very dramatic.

Definitely makes a difference, yes, which is why I sort of made that disclaimer that it would be YT audio. However, it doesn't defeat the purpose since the differences can still be heard and from there one can extrapolate what the differences indeed would be in context of an actual direct "rip" from the vinyl versus wave. And what makes this evident is the fact that I programmed- compressed a version of Rapture for example, for comparison; to make it apples to apples so to speak. And the difference, as I said, is there and if one were to extrapolate what it would probably sound like with a better fidelity file of the FDR, they would start to understand the differences. In my opinion, I don't think the differences are that great. In fact I don't think old school mixes will sound that different by virtue of them not being smashed to bits nor "victims" of modern production. But differences are there, for sure. Something more modern, IF as a TRUE "before pre-mastering" track was made FDR, you will hear tremendous difference! Then you would get FDR, and that would have to be released as 24-bit, not vinyl. Vinyl you technically lose information. I think the idea that vinyl is this holy grail of audio greatness is due to the practices surrounding its time: the practice of mixing without slamming/loudness in mind as we do now. Otherwise it would make more sense to release FULL DYNAMIC RANGE on a 24-bit medium, without slamming or limiting.

Do you remember the "remastered" issue altars for example? Few years ago I posted a level matched comparison and it came to light that it was actually not really re-mastered but simply put through a limiter. That was a different story though, not really related to these FDR versions. But it's just a point, some times these things are not what they seem.
