Sick of Firefox and Chrome, would rather not use IE, and I've been told about Avant, which runs on the IE engine but is still better than Chrome.

Well I just tried Avant and OH MY GOD it is SLOW AS FUCK. Is this my PC not handling it or is it a browser setting? Jesus H. Gonzalez, it took ten minutes just to open the File menu! Not to mention that, with the browser running, even opening Task Manager was a grueling, mind-numbing waiting game. I finally managed to go to Settings via the taskbar icon and saw nothing that helped.

the current version of IE is so horrendously slow i can't understand how anyone tolerates it. anything that's based on IE is probably going to have similar problems

My processor is old, but Firefox and Chrome jack it up to 100% usually :homework: streaming audio/video on Firefox was a major pain in the ass. Chrome handled video pretty well but Adobe Flash's last update caused my audio to sound garbled.

Firefox didn't give me those issues when I first installed it, nor did Chrome. It's only after a few months that Firefox started streaming audio/video out of sync. And It's only after this last Flash update that Chrome began making YouTubeing an agonizing experience.

my main gripe with firefox is having that bookmark button right next to the drop-down button for most frequently visited URL's. i've accidentally bookmarked so many things with that :hate:

i need to restart it every few days otherwise it starts getting really slow and unresponsive but other than that it's decent

disclaimer: all I read was title and first post

Opera has served me fine for the last two years, still have firefox in case I need it, but it's rare and getting even more rare

built in torrent downloader, only need 4 extensions to get it to do all I need (firefox I have around 30 extensions), it really doesn't use much memory considering all the functionality, new firefox stole the speed dial and shit anyway

Downloaded Opera, works fine :santa: it's quick, doesn't peg my processor at 100% like Firefox, and my PC's age only shows on YouTube videos when I try to fullscreen, the video lags for like a minute then catches up with the audio.

Still gonna wipe this fucker clean though :grim:

IE 9 is very fast on my new HP computer, but it's also the most powerful one they make! (Plus, it has a solid state hard drive, but that doesn't affect internet speed.) I prefer Firefox because it has a separate search box, whereas IE9 and Chrome use the main URL box for searches. :frown:

Re: need new browser

Posted: 04 Dec 2012, 10:44
by jawn galliano
i mean, my transfer speeds and everything are fine in IE9. it's just the application itself is really unresponsive -- it feels like i'm trying to do uh... something resource-intensive in windows, on my old 486 machine. like taking a full minute from launch until it renders the home page and allows me to interact with anything. that kind of slow. my laptop isn't exactly cutting edge or anything, but the other browsers don't generally have this problem unless i have several tabs open with flash running in all of them.

Seriously, it's retardedly fast how I access search with Chrome. In the address bar, I can just type out what I want to search on Google, or an address I want to go to. I type y and hit TAB and it's a YouTube search box. I type w and TAB will make it a WeatherUnderground search. wi and TAB makes it Wikipedia. a and TAB busts out some Amazon searching. Why the hell would I want to have to click into another box and choose my desired engine from a drop down list instead?

I'm with Shredlord on this one. I use the hell out of that search bar. I can type something into it and press the search button with my middle mouse button and have it open in another tab.

I actually open almost every link with the mouse wheel button. :xx:

If they work...I can't get a new tab to open in Chrome when I want to search.

Let me get this straight:

1. Enter search item in URL bar

2. Press TAB

3. I should have a new tab with the search results? Doesn't happen.

You should read my prior posts in this thread. TAB is only to select a search engine other than your default. Ctrl-T opens a new tab and the cursor is automatically in the omnibox.

What's the advantage of peeling an scrapple when eating a chicken sandwich?

You don't need to switch from one box to another. You don't even need to fuck with the mouse to search in a new tab, is the point. use the shortcut key to open a new tab, punch in your search and hit fucking enter. That's pretty clear and simple.
