How do you cure writer's block?

Post by Inverted Crosses And Gorebongs »

This is some seriously awful shit.

I started writing reviews for Teufel's Tomb again. Dude is only sending two albums at a time which makes the whole process a lot less stressful and easier for me to write better material. However, I've been sitting here for almost three hours with only a paragraph written. I want to write but cannot properly formulate my thoughts and ideas!

So, how do any of you writers take care of your writer's block?

Start writing about all of the negatives. Get pissed off. Works great for me.

most professional writers say keep on writing, even if its shit it should get the old noodle into gear.

It's funny you mention this because I almost always have an easier time writing negative reviews than the positive ones.

You might or might not have already read this but I found it pretty helpful for writer's block problems.

i don't know, i've never really had problems with writer's block, but i'm not much of a writer outside of papers for class and whatnot. since i rarely have to deviate far from a standard essay format, it's easy to keep my thoughts organized and elaborate on them. are you just going off the cuff, or are you using a structured format?

try constraining yourself to a standard format! opening paragraph containing thesis statement, followed by a sentence for each supporting argument, and then a paragraph dedicated to each of those supporting arguments. the end product is much more readable for a general audience and (my personal experience) the process of sticking to a structural formula helps rein in the clusterfuck of ideas that's usually floating around in one's head. win win

sounds like stupid/obvious advice but it really does help me a lot. i devote the most time and energy to developing the opening (which rarely needs to go over a third of a page for a basic humanities/psych topic or what-have-you), sometimes as much as a couple hours to work out the first few sentences.

I don't know did stormy suggest this, but when I was writing essays in school I always started the process creating "punchlines"

IE

- Third album from the band X

- Change in production is obvious, sounds better, grooves more

- Singer was changed three times and the original returned

- Third and fourth songs are totally bone crushers and seven and eight could easily be found from Megadeth second album.

- Overall this album makes my head bang

And then started writing around these lines. It's pretty easy method after you got the punchlines done. At least for me.

^Good call. Punchlines (or bullet points as i call them) obviously wont work if youre attempting the next great absurdist novel, but for theses, essays and reviews they should act as an ideal framework.

I think that is better taking a little pause instead of writing shit. So, if you have a block shitty my advice is relax. Go out for a walk, smoke a cigarette (if u smoke), drink a tea....don't know...what you want. Inspiration comes in pause moments.

When you are in a writter's block the best thing you can do is to read/listen/watch something inspirational. For instance, I always find myself feel somewhat inspired after listening FFF or reading Blake or Kitts, even Schopenhauer etc, it's really it's like you feed off them. Not in a way that you start to write along the vein of Morbid Angel or Blake, I am talking about pure energy or whatever you call it.

But this maybe isn't so much helpful to you as you are writing some reviews, I just meant in general.

Of course, If you feel burnt out you simply have to put it aside and recharge your batteries.

being drunk can illicit many words and ideas...then you sort out the good from the drunken rambling, and there you go.

Just write anything down no matter how useless it is. Your thoughts will surface soon enough. Edit it all down at the end.

And put aside time to write, you got to get into the 'flow' and have nothing drag you back out once you're in.

I find a dictaphone handy. The main cause of writers block is trying to write. So much inspiration is lost in the attempt to record thoughts on paper.
