Laptop Battery Question

Post by Teignub »

Ok so my Laptop battery seems to be working fine, but once it charges to 100% my computer tells me that i have 0% battery life. It will run fine for a couple hours like its supposed to but I can never tell when my computer is about to die. is this a problem with my battery or is my computer having a problem recognizing battery life? im also curious if anyone else has had problems like this and what eventually happened. it happened to my friends computer and his battery eventually just died.

i have a warranty on it so im gonna try to squeeze money out of bestbuy and make them give me another battery for free even though this one still kinda works.

question; did you condition the battery when you first got it?

it sounds like a faulty battery, I see this everyday at work. after 2-3 years (or if they weren't conditioned) they say 100% but then drop to 0%.

when you first get a laptop or a new battery, you should charge it up and then let it drain completely. do this a couple of times if necessary with a light or heavy work load. it gives the computer an idea of how much actual time you can continue working.

This is not universally true.

Li-Ion typically should get a 100% to 40% then charge which occasional near-full discharges (approx. every 30th cycle to calibrate). Also, high temperature decreases Li-Ion's life span.

NiCd however tends to lose charge capacity with frequent partial discharges and should be brought from 100% to 0% and charged fully.
