bought a new computer
nothing state of the art, but so much better than what we've been using.
wife does a lot of photo editing for her photography gigs and we needed something that had a good dedicated graphic card and ram without breaking the bank.
SkyTech ArchAngel GTX 1050 Ti Gaming Computer Desktop PC FX-6300 3.50 GHz 6-Core,
GTX 1050 Ti 4GB, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, 24X DVD, Wi-Fi USB, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
while the 8gb ram isn't a ton - it apparently can easily be upgraded to 32gb if we so desired.
also, as far as gaming goes - I don't really play the heavy hitters so I'm not worried.
every once in a while I break out WoW, Skyrim, Cities Skylines or Tropico - that's about as hard as I game and the laptop we've been using can't even handle Cities Skylines without crashing

Windows10 forced me into the direction of Ubuntu. These days if you can double click you'll likely be able to install linux

Re: bought a new computer
is it really that bad? I know people didn't like windows 10 when it firs came out but surely they've worked out most of the kinks by now?

Re: bought a new computer
you can't 'work out the kinks' of full-time telemetry, it's built in to the OS and bypasses your hosts config. unless you're savvy enough to block microsoft's telemetry servers at the router level, and continuously monitor to make sure they don't change addresses, everything you do in win10 is monitored and reported to microsoft

i haven't followed the trajectory of OSX very closely since i haven't had a mac in 6-7 years, and though it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case i honestly have no clue

Nice specs, loco. Though I'd rather bang 8.1 than get blown by 10 lol

Re: bought a new computer
I have all the gps bullshit turned off on my phone and also keep my phone on airplane mode unless I'm actually expecting or need to make a call. I also got a VPN for my phone for when I connect to wifi. the amount of spam calls and text that I got went from 3-5 per day to zero in about a month.
I don't but if you really don't want to be tracked, pay for everything in cash.

Re: bought a new computer
this is good advice but your purchases are still tracked wherever you go, they just aren't linked directly to your bank account, it's kind of interesting. they can likely identify your sex and age range by what you purchase. and all that data is used for marketing research and what not. big stores are also likely able to build profiles from people who pay in cash based of their spending habits.Rufus T. Firefly wrote:I don't but if you really don't want to be tracked, pay for everything in cash.
the keyboard you use on your phone also probably (if you're using a third party keyboard app then definitely) tracks everything you've ever typed and sent to anyone. your email provider scans all your emails and tracks what you're talking about, your purchase receipts, etc and sell all that for fun.
every page of any website with analytics (so most of them) tracks every click you make, every page you visit, your browser type, length of time you were there, location, isp, etc. this also includes 'anonymous' purchases on commerce sites. an account is still created for you, you just don't have access to it.
also the vpn thing, i think all american based vpn providers are required by law to give up any information on anyone if requested by the authorities. your masked traffic can still potentially be linked to you based on what i've mentioned above and more.
there is no escape

the vpn I use is based in Prague and has servers around the world that you can choose to connect to.
