Has anyone here filled out a last will and testament?
I don't know how this subject came up while talking with my parents earlier today, but they were kind of disappointed that I haven't gotten around to doing this yet. According to them it would be a huge complicated mess if I were to die without having filled anything out, even though aside from a decent chunk of savings I don't even have much in the way of assets.
Anyway I was just looking at a sample last will and testament on legalzoom.com. I'm guessing it's just a matter of filling in a lot of blanks on a document, but it still appeared to be a daunting task. I'll probably look into whether there are any resources that my employer offers as a benefit to get this thing done right.

Always figured a note would be sufficient

in Kentucky it's actually legal to write and sign a will yourself. I have one written, it's basically a message to my family telling them how much they meant to me, etc and what to do with all my stuff.

All of my finance stuff would be easy for my wife or grandmother to handle. The wife already knows what my feelings are towards any long term medical things and what I'd like to be done after I fuck off the earth.
Outside of that it's not like I lead a very complicated life that's gonna take years to sort out my belongings.

I should look into this further, but my understanding at this point is that if I don't fill anything out all my belongings will go to my next of kin. I have four siblings and two parents. That's who I would give everything to anyway. I don't really care who would get what.
I don't own a home, and everything in my apartment would take an afternoon to haul to the dump. My car would probably just be donated somewhere.
I'll probably fill something out eventually, but I got kind of annoyed by the implication that me spending an afternoon filling in blanks on a legal form and then tracking down a notary would somehow make everything go like clockwork.

I hereby request that all my personal belongings be thrown into a dumpster and set on fire

will a few ibanez RG's and a fuckton of games and LP's be enough for a $20k cremation in our dystopian capitalist future?Hitoshura wrote:i have no assets, if i die and there's anyone left to claim anything they'll just have a pile of stupid shit i've accumulated that they can liquidate to cover the cost of torching my dead ass

If you donate your body to a medical school they'll send the cremated remains to someone in your family

the no-frilliest cremation package available in 2014 was about $3000 here, i would assume regional variances apply so it's probably slightly cheaper elsewhere.zim wrote:is cremation that expensive?

i expect the profit margins even on the cheapest possible service are quite healthy
funeral sales is definitely one of the scum of the earth type of professions
