i wanted to buy one but literally every piece of advice online was "don't do it" so i ended up buying a receiver and bookshelf speakers

I do. If you have any modern flat screen and not another sound source be it a sound bar or speakers of some sort, your doing it fucking wrong because the sound is paper thin and weak.

Yeah my dvd player has some killer speakers with a lot of bass but if I'm on YouTube or netflix it's straight through the tv and it's pretty meh that way

i am not in the know with the this but i am the skeptical the soundbar surpasses the external speakers in the quality

Don’t do it if you have a receiver.
The new Harman Citation bar sounds really good but there are so many things that can go wrong with HMDI ARC and CEC stuff. Plus they’re fucking expensive.

I have an old Marantz receiver (analog) and two very nice hifi speakers connected to my TV. Costs much less and gives you more options.

yeah this is the way to go. a bit more setup involved but well worth it
