Vacation ideas

Post by Grudge »

I'm looking for suggestions for a 1 week Spring or Summer vacation.

The last time I went on a real vacation was in Sept 2017. That was a pathetically short vacation of 9 days in which I went to New York City, Niagara Falls, Toronto and DC. Any other PTO I ever had from my previous job I used up to attend job interviews, because my job gave shit pay, and I was always on the prowl for a better job. I also lost a lot of PTO completely when I switched over to my current job. So that's like 3 weeks from 2017 until the end of 2018 that I was never able to save up to enjoy as a real vacation. Plus I didn't have money to go on a vacation anyway, because, like I said, my job paid like shit.

I forecast that this year I will have a good 4 weeks. So I plan to have a 1 week vacation for late Spring or Summer. I get Memorial Day off for May 27th and July 4th, so its got to be around those days, before, during or after.

What do you suggest? I'm thinking about Miami Beach as an option.

america is big enough that there are certainly places that are just as nice if not nicer than the typical vacation spots, and far less expensive. miami sounds like a typical vacation spot.

Thanks guys.

I thought hard about this and I think I'll have to cancel on my vacation plans. I don't have the money to spare for this. I do have money, but in a lot of ways I don't. Payments to make now, future payments I might not be able to make if I do this, debt, etc.

The funny thing is, this is despite the fact that I am making a lot more money than I was last year. Constantly stressed about money.

are you able to handle all of your financial responsibilities and have money to spare? if the answer is 'yes' then you're good

'money to spare' as in you have enough money to do things like splurge a little here and there on things like food/entertainment. if you're spending money you don't have on a vacation then yeah, don't do that.

you could always take a vacation at home. sit around, go to the movies, go hiking, etc

Current expenses that are screwing with my finances

- I'm paying for all my wife's graduate tuition.
- 2018 tax return, more than a couple grand $ I owe. This was brought down from more than $ 4 grand, thankfully since I itemized my wife's tuition on it, this gave me a $2 grand student credit.
- Have to save up to pay off my massive tuition debt to my dad

Things I have to save up for that will hit me later this year

- Car downpayment in October (I had leased my vehicle almost 3 years ago and will likely now have to buy it)
- Strongly considering buying a house (therefore have to make downpayment) by December, and all other expenses that come with it
- Trip to visit my parents abroad back home in December, that's going to cost no less than $ 3 grand which is fucked

That's just right. If you take a vacation in the savagelands, I can hire someone to take your wife away from you...never to be seen again. :grim:

Where in the Philippines would you recommend one should visit for a vacation? Serious question. How expensive would it be, what kind of food is worth tasting, what is there to do, what time of year is it the best weather?

Every month the tuition alone takes $2000 out of my pocket. By the time she's graduated in late 2020, I'll be down $32K.

So yea, I have to live fairly frugally. I live in a low-income Mexican neighborhood so the rent is cheap. :xx:

It would be better living there if my spanish speaking neighbors didn't have their accordion based music blaring out of their vehicles for hours over the weekend, every weekend. I don't think they have a good indoors stereo so what they do is they congregate in the parking lot to have barbecues and and turn up accordion based cultural music really loud on their car stereo. That's my only gripe otherwise it's nice and peaceful, I keep to myself, and pay really low rent compared to what others pay. I wish I could speak Spanish and make some friends there.
