My car died
Hyundai Sonata 2009 - 2019
Somehow all the oil leaked out and the engine locked up. So now it’s either spend a few grand and drop a new engine in or get a new car.

That's nothing. I drive a '96 Nissan Sentra (Sunny) with crank windows and a stick shift everyday to the workplace. I don't even want to look at the mileage on that.

I was wondering the same thing...Hitoshura wrote:aw man that blows. did your oil light not come on or what
I've got a '07 Hyundai with about the same mileage. It seems to be running fine, but I'm thinking of buying the most recent/low mileage used car I can find that doesn't have all this new technology that I don't want (rear camera, lane departure alert, automatic breaks, etc.). Plus I'm trying to avoid the falling apart sequence of the car's life.
I drove my last car until the transmission died which put me in a position of needing to buy something asap in the dead of winter. Fucking sucked.

We just had one at work that was completely out of oil cause the oil cooler line was leaking like a splendid mate of mine

Re: My car died
Was driving home late Friday night and oil pressure light came on about halfway home. It was sporadic in that it would come on and off at random intervals. It was too late to take it anywhere so I drove it home with the intent of taking it into the shop ASAP the next morning. Next day I checked the oil - it was low but still had some so I drove it the nearest shop about 2 miles away but now the light wasn’t flashing like before - it was solid. From what I could tell looking it up online it sounded like might have been a bad pump or something like that. Made it to the shop just fine though it did start making some noise on the way there. Apparently that was it’s death knell because the car would start after that - they had to push it into the garage and upon inspection noted that the oil tank had a hole in it and subsequently the engine locked up as a result. They worked on it for over an hour trying to get it to turn but it was too late. What’s weird is that there wasn’t any oil on the ground where I usually park my car but there was def a leak - had it towed back to the house on a flat bad and there was oil all over the bed afterwards.
I knew I might need a new car soon but you know - kind of wanted to do it on my time. Unfortunately I live over 20 miles from work so uber is out of the question (would be $80 round trip everyday!) - picked up a rental car yesterday. While dropping an engine in might be the cheaper option in the short term I do wonder about doing it on an older car and if that money would be better spent just getting a nice used car instead.

Re: My car died
yeah that noise was probably the pistons scoring the cylinder wall and then fusing with the engine block
shitty and expensive lesson to learn but yeah, you never ever fuck around with an oil pressure warning (or oil level, but you can at least keep an extra quart or two in the trunk for that). if that shit comes on pull over and get it towed

Re: My car died
Big ones (tundra, ram, f150) are also stupid expensive to buy and repair too. You'll get 20-25 in the smaller ones (tacoma and the like) depending on how you drive.
I'm gonna look into getting one through work in the next year probably, because cheap.

bought a used 2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. Really nice car - only had 45k miles on it.
now I need to figure out what to do with the Sonata - doubt I'll get much money for it selling to a scrap yard.

Re: My car died
Transmissions are usually the first to go out on trucks. I had an 87 Chevy shortbed and had to rebuild the tranny twice in 5 years. Finally got tired of it and sold the engine for 500 bucks. Sure do miss that truck.

Who or what did you buy the new car through? I've had really good luck with the one I have now, but I'm not sure if the fact that it was certified preowned had anything to do with it.Rufus T. Firefly wrote:bought a used 2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. Really nice car - only had 45k miles on it.

When my Accord died the dealership I bought the used replacement car from gave me $500 so they could sell it to a place that would salvage it for parts. I doubt if they got much more off that than they gave me.

Lumbergh, before you buy a used car, make sure to watch all the videos by this mechanic.

I was scrolling through all his videos and noticed one about Russian military vehicles. Varg immediately came to mind. Is he featured in it? Let's find outThe Ultimate wrote:Lumbergh, before you buy a used car, make sure to watch all the videos by this mechanic.

Re: My car died
Got it from a used car dealer that had a bunch of really good reviews online. Had the dealer put in a stipulation of a full refund or exchange lasting no longer than 48 hours pending a vehicle inspection. Took the car to a mechanic that day and had him do a full inspection of the vehicle - everything checked out. Just normal wear and tear, no structural, frame or mechanical issues.Paste Human wrote:Who or what did you buy the new car through? I did look at a couple of dealerships certified pre owned stuffs and the prices they were asking were ridiculous. The vehicle I got was a former lease (carfax very useful in this regard) and the previous owner took good car of it according to the mechanic.

Re: My car died
That's a pretty good idea to include the 48 hour return/refund stipulation so you could have a trusted mechanic look it over. I'm planning to eventually take a few days off and use them to look around and hopefully buy something, and that would definitely increase the options. Although since I'll probably try to get a Hyundai Sedan or a Camry with 50-70 K on it I'm not sure how much looking around I'll need to do.
