Ryzen. Of course Intel's latest i7s/i9s are faster but if you're not one of those overlocking/benchmarking folk who turn on their PCs just to look at sites like TweakTown all day long, I doubt you'd notice the difference. My PC uses a Ryzen 5 2600 and it definitely doesn't bottleneck in games (or in anything for that matter) and you'd have more bling to spend on things like a higher-end video card, better PSU, better SSD, better case, etc.

Even if you're gonna use it for professional work, I personally know a lot of folk in the multimedia/animation/graphic design industry who swears by their Ryzen 5/7 CPUs.

Yeah, my thoughts are also going towards the Ryzen 5 2600. With an RX 580 8GB video card.
Looking for 16 GB RAM.

A nice combo with these specs goes for around 800 here.

if you're looking to stay under a grand i'd say go AMD for the CPU and plow those savings into an nvidia GPU

Yeah I’ve had two AMD Radeon cards that failed on me within the last 10 years. Geforce is the way to go.
