Well, looks like I will be moving to Minnesota after all.
haven't signed anything yet, but had an interview on Friday and was contacted later that day with an offer, making about $10K more than I am now + relocation assistance.
The wife will also have better employment opportunities in her field so this will be a nice change. we'll have to sell our current place and then rent short term up there until we are established enough to look for a home to buy.
any of you guys that have moved a long distance like this - what was it like trying to find a place to live without seeing it in person first?
I'll admit that prospect terrifies me a little because of how shady some rentals/landlords can be.

we did this when we moved to california. it was a little unnerving but mostly we thought ‘if this house sucks we’ll find a new place for the next year and if it’s a complete shithole we’ll just break the lease.’Burton C. look at all the pictures in the listing a million times and for the places you really like look up the address as there are often old listings with different photos
then do a poop load of research about the neighborhoods where your favorite places are, and daydream about what it would be like to live there
then pick one and be happy, because minnesota is a million times better than fucking florida

massive congrats LUMBERGH JARK OFF you deserve it
i second the motion of doing virtual tours. you will need to put the time in online teeing it all up, but if you can get an agent on the other end of the line walking you through the property you will have a much better sense of the place and you can ask questions as you notice them. i only moved into a place sight unseen once and it worked out OK - it was a bit smaller than it looked online but that was it. and always ask about neighbours

Re: Well, looks like I will be moving to Minnesota after all.
I live in Minneapolis so maybe we'll be neighbors
I'm currently living in the south end of uptown, but I know the north metro well since I grew up there. Mahtomedi/Stillwater/White Bear/Hugo are towns I could maybe answer questions about.
Every now and then I look into relocating to St. Paul in the Cathedral Hill area (think F. Scott Fitzgerald, James J. Hill, etc) because you can rent or even buy into a converted mansion for surprisingly cheap given how ritzy of an area it is. It's very picturesque and would maybe be a fun but also affordable stopover if you're in between places.
PM me and maybe we can grab a drink some time if you end up moving here. I could also lend a hand or get you with the right people if you need anything
Incidentally here's a good look at a bowling alley a few blocks away from me:

Why not? Might even be fun to meet you half way like around St. Cloud, assuming he moves up here. Unless you're dying to experience the Twin Cities - world renown for its riots and corrupt law enforcement:)

No idea where we will actually be situated just yet - relocation company that we hired (and is also being paid for by work) is in the process of finding us 60 day temp housing (likely a furnished condo / hometown). Once we're settled in we will definitely start the process of looking for a house to buy (also got the ball rolling on selling our place here in Florida)
When we were up there in October we actually drove out into the country side to Watertown, Darwin, up to St Cloud and then back into town. We also checked out Eagan, Burnsville, scrapple Valley, Savage, Bloomington, Hopkins, Plymouth, Brooklyn Center, the Como area, Woodbury, and White Bear Lake just to get the vibes of the different areas.
interestingly enough I'll be working in Uptown right next to Bde Maka Ska.

Re: Well, looks like I will be moving to Minnesota after all.
Small world - I'm about a ten minute walk from that lake
If you can find a suitable place in that area (south uptown, Linden Hills, Kingfield) it's pretty convenient as far as the layout goes, but surprisingly scenic for how otherwise urban it is, if that makes sense. Parks every few blocks probably explains that. The rose gardens/Lake Harriet/Lakewood Cemetery/the bird sanctuary are a big reason I've stuck around. It's really nice being about a ten minute drive to downtown and a ten minute walk to lakes and wooded areas.
Parts of old St. Paul are gorgeous because of all the gilded age architecture that was restored and then meticulously maintained (e.g. Summit Ave.) but I've never lived there. But if I made a move while staying local that would probably be the first place I'd look.

And to think for all these years I've been referring to it as Lake Filthy Savage...
Fun local trivia: the chain of lakes is stocked with muskies but also subject to strict catch and release limits. As a result there is tons of urban legend about small dogs getting devoured in Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis.

Re: Well, looks like I will be moving to Minnesota after all.
I've been here for about a week now - just in time for the vice squad to do something else idiotic. Seeing the national guard around town in humvees and open carrying machine guns has certainly been something. Welcome to America, I guess.
The apartment I'm in is small, but nice. I'm In the process of closing on my Florida house at the end of the month - we put it up on a Friday and by Sunday had 8 offers above our asking price, which is also nice.
The weather has been all over the place - from cool to snowing to short-sleeve weather to back below freezing this morning. I guess that's pretty typical in spring, eh?

Also, I got vaccinated yesterday (part 1 anyways) - I am not sure if I would have been at all eligible if I were still in Florida. literally walked into a clinic here without an appointment and was out in less than 15 minutes.
we have a great view of the highway from our apartment - but there have been some epic sunsets in the evenings here.

Welcome to town. Spring in MN can be tough but the golden hour will rock your world coming up when weather gets more predictable. Find a lake for amazing sunsets. It'd be great to meet some time now that you're nearby.

you gonna buy straight away once you close on your FL house, or rent for a while and see if the RE market cools off a bit?

Well, we only have a 2 month stay in the apartment so we’ll have to move out in June regardless. as for the market who the hell knows, even here in MN it’s a bit inflated right now despite everything. The plan now is to buy and lock in a low interest rate - because despite the higher prices, renting for a year and then dealing with a higher interest rate when(if) prices drop would probably be a bad move unless you can time it perfectly. Interestingly what we sold the house for and what we’re making on it despite barely making a dent in our previous mortgage will actually allow us to get a place either on par with or even slightly nicer than our previous house.

We settled for an interest rate of 1.5% for a 30 year mortgage.
Very lucky with such a low rate right now.
Did you meet jorsh yet?

Re: Well, looks like I will be moving to Minnesota after all.
yeah prices are the real mystery. rates aren't going anywhere though IMO, the fed has pretty much explicitly said they aren't going to move anytime soon. with mortgage applications on a decline in the last month or two, lenders aren't going to have much room to raise rates. on the other end, mortgage delinquencies are ballooning (~16-17% delinquency rate for FHA alone in your metro) and eventually forbearance programs will come to an end which will at least partially cure the supply issue. but as always the question is 'when' and nobody knows
rate-wise it's still a great time to buy of course, but i'd be afraid of getting in at the top i hope if it all comes tumbling down, it does so in the next 2 months

That's honestly holding up any moving on my part. Trying to move and get more for my money at something remotely reasonable.
