you're trying to kite the tank here

it won't work

Re: Souls Games

correct

if you're trying to kite your tank, your whole approach needs a fundamental reassessment

Re: Souls Games

my dear sir, clearly you have not played much left 4 dead

Re: Souls Games

also correct

my main exposure to kiting strategies comes from FFXI, where you were a de facto tank if you were kiting something

you are playing knitting games?

Re: Souls Games

no you definitely want to kite the tank in l4d, preferably after setting it on fire. that way you don't have to use any of your precious ammunition on it

a true master will set the tank on fire, kite it into the safe room, and then close the door from the outside :xx:

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 25 Jan 2017, 05:26
by jawn galliano
i don't know the game well but i approve of all of those things :xx:

'tank' in online RPG parlance refers to the player/role who holds the attention of whatever you're trying to kill. in FFXI, you kited certain monsters because you could out-range their abilities and avoid taking damage, which made life for support/healers easier

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 25 Jan 2017, 05:31
by happiness and harmony
oh that is much cleverer than what it refers to in l4d, which is a giant monster who wants to smash your face into tiny face parts

upon examination that definitely ought to be set on fire and locked in a closet

hopefully with a very sturdy door

the end-of-level safe room door is usable only by humans :gay:

Re: Souls Games

in versus mode you can't shut the safe room door after it has opened but the strategy for killing a tank is about the same

light it on fire and fucking run

i hope they make another left 4 dead, the game is mostly dead these days :tear:

i'm talking about the saferoom at the end of the map, not at the beginning

the first time i played versus i didn't know you can't shut the door at the beginning and i thought i was so clever running back to avoid the tank. that was quite a surprise

i finished OoT finally so installed dark souls

it is very addictive

i like the aesthetic a lot but find the undead thing a bit weird. i am playing a bandit and have killed the first two bosses. i wasted a lot of time trying to kill this knight hard-on bearer at a low level; i can see that this is the game's time sink, trying to pwn the higher level guys early for fat loot. the story and npcs are pretty shit/non-existent. which is a shame as it's really not that hard to write something with a bit of originality. but i am enjoying it, even though i keep drinking potions by accident because that's the same button for the sword in zelda :redneck:

if it's the black knight in the undead burg, you can dash past him to grab the ring he guards. killing him is definitely worthwhile if you can manage it as he has a chance to drop one of the black knight weapons, which are really strong in the early game. you can also fight havel in the tower basement right near there, he drops a very useful ring. just play conservatively against him as he'll one-shot you if he manages to connect.

the storyline is pretty sparsely told, that's just kind of a hallmark of the series. i never got particularly invested in the story aspect of the games so i have no idea if it's any good if you take the time and effort to work it all out.

if you can position yourself behind an enemy you can backstab them for uber damage

also you can use some of those firebombs to kill him

Re: Souls Games

another really strong early game weapon can be found if you get to the route underneath the bridge guarded by the dragon. bring a bow and a bunch of arrows, there's a spot where you can shoot his tail. if you hit it enough times a sword will break off of it :redneck:

Did some pretty sweet invasions. Best one was where I beat host and his two ghosts, that was in Boreal Valley. Road of Sacrifices, around Crucifixion Woods is another really great playground, plunge attacked one panicked host to death! YEAH!

Re: Souls Games

i still haven't found any arrows or bolts but i did get a crossbow, just need some ammunition for it

i don't really understand the humanity dynamic, or the "kindle" thing

i found a blacksmith finally so i could beef up my halberd which was cool. i killed that black knight fucker easy. then a big bull. i am in the parish. it is heaps of fun :xx: but you can't pause  - this has fucked me over a few times with phone calls and door knocks and whatnot

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 31 Jan 2017, 21:55
by jawn galliano
yeah the pause thing is deliberate because of co-op/invasions, basically treat it like an online multiplayer game in that respect. if you want to 'pause' you have to exit to the main menu, the game automatically saves so you don't have to worry about losing any progress

once you have the rite of kindling, you can spend humanity at bonfires to kindle them, which increases the number of estus flask charges you get when resting at that particular bonfire. you can kindle a bonfire up to three times for a maximum of 20 estus uses

there's two other things with humanity -- the first being human vs hollow form. the default is human form, where you can summon NPCs to aid with bosses or other players to do co-op, and you can also be invaded by other players. when you die, you go hollow, and lose access to summoning but also can no longer be invaded. if you prefer to play solo, you can just stay hollowed and there's no real penalty.

there's also the humanity stat, which you increase by consuming the humanity items that certain enemies & all bosses drop. the main thing that does is increase your item discovery stat. there's also a few weapons that have damage scaling based on your humanity stat. when you die, whatever humanity you had at the time will be left with your accumulated souls, so you have to get back to your bloodstain without dying to avoid losing it.

that all makes sense, thanks. i thought it was weird that my fire at the firelink shrine gave me 10 heals but the one near the bosses i am trying to kill gave me 5: huh: - i must have kindled it the former

i am now trying to kill the bell gargoyle and freaky butterfly thing that doesn't take any damage when i hit it :frown:

i am around level 30 now and have a zwieterrsomething giant slow sword that does 195 dmg :xx:

the multiplayer elements seem weird to me, is it fun multi?

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 01 Feb 2017, 10:52
by jawn galliano
the main multiplayer element is invasions which is PVP, some people go nuts for it but i never got much into it. if you get absolutely stuck on a boss you can use an NPC or player summon to help, but it completely takes all the challenge out of it so i only recommend going that route as a last resort.

bell gargoyles aren't too bad, they're lightning weak so if you have any gold pine resins, pop one right as you enter and try to blitz down the first one ASAP. by the time the second one enters the fray and becomes a threat you can have it most of the way dead, if not entirely. once you kill the first one, the second should use its fire breath pretty much exclusively so you can run right up to it and strafe around a bit to safely get in hits until its dead.

Re: Souls Games

the fire knocks my fps around which has been frustrating. and i have never seen any gold pine resins or any kind of projectiles/magic apart from a few firebombs and black firebombs :frown:

it's ok though, i can do it :grim:

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 01 Feb 2017, 19:48
by jawn galliano
i think there's a chest with some gold pine resins in the undead burg near the main bonfire. after you dash up the bridge, clear the room with the three guys, and advance to the courtyard where you can climb up on the roof, there's a house you can enter. should be inside there

:santa:

you can also summon solaire outside the fog gate

Re: Souls Games

i am not sure where that is stormy
i am also not sure what that is zim

but i crushed them old fashion style, with much R-trigger smiteage. then i went to the catacombs and now i can't beat this soldier who flipped the switch on the bridge, killing me. so i attacked him but he is way stronger than me and my souls are stuck there and he is a fucker

Re: Souls Games

Posted: 04 Feb 2017, 10:01

now i can't find the undead mage that keeps reanimating the skeletons in the deep catacombs, if i dash past about 25 of the buggers including a giant one, and a scorpion monster dude, then i can find an undead mage but previously they were always situated closer to the dudes they were reanimating. it's tough getting through that many skeletons when they reanimate

Re: Souls Games

oh the catacombs are rough times. it's very dark in there and i do not remember the necromancer positions very precisely. however, this map will solve all mysteries, if you wish to have them solved for you!
