Thanks :). I'm actually embarrassed by how heavy I'd let myself get...let's just say that I had the classic moment of stepping on a scale and going "HOW much?!?" in genuine shock; I knew I needed to do something. Ideally I'd like to lose another 50 pounds if I can; I'm 56 now, so if I can lose significant weight while my metabolism's still fast enough to let me then it'll stand me in really good stead for the years to come. I'm doing it as a lifestyle change, and not a 'weight loss diet', so it's sustainable and doesn't make me miserable like I've seen diets do to so many people; I miss cheese, to be sure (I fucking LOVE cheese and I've allowed myself some this week as a reward for hitting the big 5-0), but otherwise I still get to eat all the stuff I like and drink some beer.

I already feel SO much better - I have more energy, I'm sleeping better, my overall mood has improved - that I see no reason not to just keep doing this. All I did was cut out cheese (which effectively cut out bread, too), reduce my meal sizes (I ate very healthy stuff, but was making meals that were too big), reduce my beer intake a bit (I mean let's not go crazy here :redneck:) and - crucially - cycle every day. I work from home, so on workdays I do a 6.5 km route around a local park on my lunch break and on days off I try to do 10km or more if I can, and I haven't skipped a single day since I started. I probably could lose it a bit faster if I cut out beer entirely, but I'd really miss that and I think I've still managed to lose it at a decent enough rate (this is 50 pounds lost since April when I started this way of doing things).

There's no real secret to weight loss - all you need to do is make sure that what you burn off is more than you take in - but the tricky part is setting things up so that you're still happy and able to enjoy life, rather then being a slave to a bathroom scales or whatever. In much the same way as you work to live and don't live to work, you should lose weight/get fit to live, and not vice versa; I do a bit of my grocery shopping on every day off and incorporate a longer route around that, so instead of "Shit, I have to go and exercise now" - which would make it an onerous ball-ache and feel like an imposition on my time which I'd resent - the cycling becomes just an organic part of getting stuff done in your day.

god damn, well done dude! congrats on the first -50, and good luck with the next

cutting out the bulk of my cheese intake i think has been much more helpful than i anticipated. though cutting out 95% of my alcohol intake is still i think the biggest contributor to my ongoing deflation. i notice even when i have a couple beers at home on the weekends, it has a noticeable effect on my mood and overall habits the following day (much lazier and prone to fucking around on the computer too much), so even though i can still maintain my weight loss with that in the picture, i've mostly done away with even that and am content to just make having a drink or two a thing reserved for when i go out.

finally broke the last arbitrary barrier as of this morning and am under 150lbs, which is something i never imagined would be possible again. i haven't weighed this little since probably my total impoverishment days. genuinely thrilled that i managed to get this far. probably going to keep going a bit further since i have the steady momentum and am generally feeling great. my main concern now is that if i lose too much more, i'll be veering into the issue of clothes not fitting, but in the opposite direction to which i am historically accustomed. thankfully i can still wear my sz50 rick owens pants 'cuz they're all drawstring-waisted, but my normal size is probably down to 46 by now.

i have made a lot of lifestyle changes to facilitate this and i feel all-around much better. i guess it shows because i have had multiple friends note that my outward demeanor has changed very noticeably this year.

OK, how about this: if/when I finally make it to my goal of losing 100 lbs, I'll share the pictures of my progress charts which will include the humiliation of showing the colossal depths of flabbitude to which I had let myself plunge. Deal?

weighed myself for the first time in awhile. up to 223, i've gained 23 pounds back out of the 25 i lost during summer :homework:

i always heard it was easy to gain weight back, this is the first time i've really experienced losing and gaining back that much weight. i guess i'm glad i experienced that in a weird way, i now know just how easy it is to gain it all back.

i am like 176cm, i am fairly active in that i try to walk at least 3-5 miles a day. i run a bit when weather permits. road conditions do not often favor it at this time of year however. so in those cases i am generally jamming a stationary bike.
