There's actually quite a few BJJ schools in the area, so I'm going to check a few out and see which I vibe with. It looks like some of them don't have no gi, so at least that'll narrow it down a bit.
I want to get into some striking also. A bit of Muay Thai wouldn't be bad to know.

There's one ~30 min away. There's a couple of Machado and Gracie schools near me also, but I'll steer clear of the Gracie cult. Making people buy school gi's

Gracie system is great. But I agree. I wouldn't want to become their member.
Machado is amazing. Jean Jacques did a seminar here in Amsterdam.
With my school I can wear whatever I want and train wherever I want. Our professor and trainers even support us in visiting other gyms to broaden our horizon and gain experience that way.
(It's Brasa btw. Under Felipe Costa)

Just walking. I try to make at least 6000 steps a day, goal is 10000. After work I don't go to the nearest metro station, and I get out one station before the nearest to my place. I also take stairs not elevator. As soon as weather improves I'll start skateboarding again.

Walking is the one. For weight loss very under-rated.

for me having a separate environment helps so i have generally preferred the gym. it has also aligned well with my goals over the years (generally strength training).
it really depends on what kind of training motivates you, what your goals are, etc.
