that's a very nice setup. the only thing i can match that on is the SSD, i have the exact same one
what kind of monitor does she have?
i will probably do a rebuild/upgrade in june to move up to a 1000-series GPU and a few other improvements. i financed my current rig through my work at 0%, once it's paid off i'll see if i can get another freebie loan for the next wave of hardware

i7s are a lot more expensive both in cost and power consumption, and don't provide any real performance advantage over the i5 for gaming. unless she's planning on doing video rendering/editing or some-such it's kind of a waste

i think youll find that 7 > 5
and so it is obviously better

the monitor is actually not amazing, its an ASUS VS228H-P 21.5, but you know it looks alright and we're okay with it. it's running at 1920x1080 so this rig should pretty much slay everything. the only thing i cheap'd out on was the ram but i don't think it really matters these days.
i put it together last night (i only wanted to kill myself once or twice) and it booted up on the first try
i woke up at 5am and saw that she was just going to bed after a long night of gaming

about $1300ish, pretty expensive but this pc will last for a long time. you could save a few hundred dollars by getting some cheaper parts.

well the hard drive could definitely go cheaper, the cpu cooler as well. you could get a cooler for like 35 bucks, don't need no fancy water coolin'

Been considering this a lot but whether I like it or not, I'm actually at the point in my life where I think a laptop with adequate specs maybe a more viable option for me at this point in mein life rather than a decked-out gaming PC. Hell I'm even considering a macbook and to think I vehemently loathed at any mac-related stuff during my younger years.
Aside from the fact that I don't really play a lot of graphic intensive games anymore, it's also more on necessities this time as I find that bringing a trustworthy laptop to to a client presentation is much more feasible rather than bringing a USB with all your presentation files only to be thwarted by the hardware available within the presentation premises. This has really happened a lot in the past few years since I started doing the work thing.
I can always upgrade ein laptop and the decked-out PC option is always there once I bring in the blings.

You caaan upgrade a laptop and it is a lot easier than it used to be (my notebook has separate panels I can remove to quickly access a couple main components and is fairly easily to disassemble to get to everything else), but honestly a PC is the smart way to go to expandability. It's just so easy and straightfoward.

Re: new pc

i mean i had no issues upgrading the RAM/HD on my last couple of laptops but it's not like you can jam a new CPU or GPU in those bitches, which is really the main thing i'd be looking for if i wanted an upgradeable machine

You could, and you're subject to the same limitations as with a desktop PC: socket compatibility. It's just more of a process to get to it than with a desktop PC.
