GIGABYTE GA-AX370-GAMING 5 mobo
amd ryzen 7 1700 8 core 3ghz
16gb of ddr4
and the 1080

it's using a mechanical hd right now which sucks but i just ordered another samsung evo

That's cool. I'm also looking into a gaming pc or laptop. I work on my iMac and want to just keep it for audio work. I just haven't been into PC setups at all for years so no idea what's good.

PCPP is the site i recommend to everyone, it's by far the most useful thing out there for toying with builds

if you're looking for a dedicated gaming machine that doesn't need to do other high end stuff, you'll want to look at an intel i5 for your CPU and the nvidia 10x series for a good GPU. you can build something very good that will future proof you for a few years with a reasonable budget on those two

be aware though, if you're like me and averse to the most recent versions of windows, you're now restricted on what kind of CPU you can use. the short version is, intel and AMD's newest stuff (kaby lake & ryzen, respectively) can only be used with windows 10. if you prefer to stick with 7, the newest compatible CPU from intel is the skylake series

Are ryzens pretty much the way to go these days? I’m building a new one as well and the i7 skylake and cawfee lake seem to be much cheaper. I’ve been reading a lot of good things about ryzens though. I’m tempted to go for a ryzen 5 2600 (or should i go for the ryzen 7 1700 instead?)

I'm waiting for RAM prices to come further down, and for these ridiculous RTX 2080 prices to come down. I may wait until the end of the year for the discounts, if there are any. Or maybe not.

thought i'd have to rebuild ahead of schedule, XIV has been running like utter trash since i upgraded to win10 a few weeks ago. tried every config trick in the book and couldn't get it to stop stuttering and dropping frames every few seconds even though the baseline framerate was comfortably over 100

decided to check my temps and it turns out my CPU has been pegged at ~100C :oldryan:

spent $30 on a coolermaster 212 to replace the stock intel jawn and now it's running at ~40 under load, stutters are gone and i'm cruising along at 120+ now :ba:

stock or running dsfix?

that one's always been tricky for me to get it running properly, hence why i just play the switch version now when i need my ds1 fix

ds1 remastered

i've played it all the way through like 10 times, i don't know why it's suddenly crashing all the time :tear:

helped my fellating lover in KS build his first gaming pc today, i specced everything out and walked him through piecing everything together and getting it all connected. i was kind of terrified because he's not really a computer hard-on bearer but we just wrapped up over facetime with him getting nvidia drivers installed. two false starts because he first forgot to connect the monitor, and then connected it incorrectly via the mainboard, but once everything was plugged up correctly it booted without issue. feeling pretty proud of myself :redneck:

parts list is:

nzxt510 case
corsair 750w PSU
amd ryzen 5 3600XT
asus x570+ mainboard
gskill ddr4 3600
sabrent rocket4 nvme 1tb
wd black 7200rpm 1tb
nvidia rtx3800

and he got some crazy samsung 30+" 240hz 1440p gsync monitor that cost $750

parts list definitely isn't optimal by any means, i stuck to an original agreed-upon budget of $1500 for the tower. i wanted to go for a good high-midrange build taking advantage of the new nvidia cards, which was targeting an rtx3070 (hence the RAM being suboptimal for example). when we struck out on release day he got impatient and decided to go balls to the wall and blow the budget out. ended up getting the 3080 on resale which went over the original budget by like $300. if i'd known he was a lot more flexible on budget i for sure would've bumped up the CPU and RAM at a minimum. it will be an extremely competent machine for years to come though so no big loss really

I built a new system late last year. I fucking love it. It took a minute to get reacquainted with current hardware specs and chipsets, though. It's been since around 2009 since I was paying attention.

Cougar gamingsomethingorother midtower
eVGA Bronze 750w PSU
ASRock B450M Pro4 Socket AM4 mobo
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 cpu
16GiB DDR4-SDRAM
Sapphire AMD Radeon RX-580, 8GiB GDDR5
256 GiB SSD
2x 1TiB HDD
Windows 10 Home x64

A lot of Doom Eternal and L4D2

But not nearly as much Doom Eternal as MiniAbzu (who turned fucking 14 today jfc)
This kid puts me to shame in first person shooters and I could not possibly be more proud.

I was going through the Mass Effect series finally, but my save corrupted pretty far in to the first game and it deeply discouraged me.

I honestly didn't think it was possible for Id to still continue to top themselves, but here we are.

i would like to rebuild and originally planned to earlier this year, but i wound up holding off 'cuz i didn't wanna spend that much. hoping my current rig holds out for a few more years at least to see if the GPU market ever returns to normal. midrange cards sell for $1000+ now and you still can't get one unless you're running multiple bots (or willing to eat a 50% premium on resale prices and also you probably need bots for that too). with the chip shortage being a factor until at least halfway thru next year, i'm not expecting the possibility of sanity in GPU prices until probably 2023-2024 at the earliest, and who knows what else will happen between now and then.
