audiophiles of mabb

yesterday i received a gift of a stereo receiver and accompanying floor speakers

they are old models–"vintage," if you like–from the olden times. a realistic sta-2000D receiver and two realistic optimus t-100 speakers

however i have no idea how to set them up or any such thing

so what do i do now

set up each speaker on the left and right

run speaker cable from the appropriate terminals on the receiver to the terminals on the back of the speaker

i'd suggest getting 12ga speaker wire, brand doesn't really matter, whatever is most reasonably priced

after that, plug source devices of your choice into the receiver, and select the appropriate input on the device to listen to its signal

post pictures of the front and back panel on the receiver if this doesn't solve your problem :santa:

that is very straightforward and helpful :llama:

but this is still going to be annoying :homework:

whenever wires get involved my brain turns into foop

it's really quite easy, the wire comes in braided pairs. you just strip off a half an inch or so from each end to insert into the terminal. one of the wires will usually have a white marking along it; make sure that it's inserted into the corresponding terminals on each end (so if it starts in the red connector on the receiver side, it should terminate on the red connector on the speaker side too)

I would like to have a device that I can connect to my amplifier to play mp3. How would you call such a thing, if it exists  I used to have a bit of cable between my pc and the amplifier but I've moved the pc out of the living room so that doesn't work anymore

finally upgraded from the scamazon $100 special stereo amp i've been using for the last 7ish years, the right channel has been slowly dying (in my latest measurements, averaging ~5-10dB lower than the left channel). my fellating lover bought one of these a few years back:

https://nadelectronics.com/product/d-30 ... amplifier/

he basically never used it and has been downsizing, offered it to me for half price so i went and picked it up today. what a massive fucking upgrade. had been toying with the idea of upgrading my speakers this year but the jump in sound quality with just the amp is so huge, i'll probably put that off for another year or two

funny enough I was just browsing speakers on the interwebs and popped over to MABB to see this thread unread...

I'm looking to buy some decent speakers for my laptop, preferably Bluetooth as I am trying to NOT have a bunch of wires everywhere. My laptop actually has decent speakers, but I need something with a bit more oomph when listening to music. Would love some recommendations.

what's your budget? and are you an absolute no on anything with wires? i only ask because there are plenty of receivers/amps etc that do bluetooth audio (so you could build a very nice setup and minimize cable runs, but have the flexibility not to be tethered to it)

also what kinda space are you planning to use this in, dimensions, placement etc., any ideas?

not looking to spend a shit load of money, just something relatively simple that sounds good - $150 would be my max, ideally less. I am not an audiophile by any means, but I know what sounds like hot garbage and what doesn't. I have a decent set of technics headphones if I really want superb sound quality but I can't stand to have those on for long periods of time. so really it boils down just a simple speaker set up, sub or no, reducing cables if possible, in a smallish office space with the laptop sitting on an L shaped desk almost in the center of the room.

hmm, at $150 max i don't think you'll find much at all for separates/powered bookshelfs unless you wanna roll the dice and trawl CL/FB marketplace. audioengine stuff is pretty well regarded for powered separates at the entry level, but i think they start at $200. sub-$150 you'd probably be looking at portables, the only ones i have direct experience with are the bose micro soundlink (work gifted them to everyone last year) which is fine but i pretty much never have a reason to use it. i used my fellating lover's JBL charge 5 last weekend though and i was pretty impressed with it, managed to pump out surprisingly strong volume from the back of his garage way out to the end of the driveway. for more casual listening in a small home office you might get some good mileage out of something like that.
