heretic is one of my top ma albums, i love it. it's like trey in his bedroom plugged straight into his computer making songs. the low-fi rough production to me was refreshing and still is. everything is so polished and overproduced these days. sometimes we need more of a rough sound, not like black metal rough though

i remember trey said he used a shitty behringer v-amp 2 to record some of the guitar rhythms. I had one of these, it sounded like hot dogshit.
Then again I don't play like Trey and I don't have Punchy doing any studio pittsburgh showdown.

I agree with zim there. That's what I liked about Heretic as well.

Kingdoms would be better with Heretic style production.

does anyone recall if there was any backlash over gateways production? i wonder if the over production of gateways is what drove trey back to a more raw sound

That's because of the electronic drumkit. The rest is all real amps. I wouldn't call it over produced though.

I just listened to Gateways for the first time in quite a while last night and holy shit did I forget how mechanized the drumming on that album sounds
My three favorites are C, F, and A in that order

I
edit: H is seriously on of the most underappreciated metal albums in general. the production "problem" is blown way out of proportion (i'm in the "i love it" camp anyway so i don't think here is a problem in the first place
) and it's chock full of classic MA songs. it just has too many too long interludes/outros
