MA Show Report

Post by zim »

VadimVon - A complete joke. No movement from the audience, it might as well have been elevator music. The lead guitarist may have the biggest ego I've ever seen. He was tossing his picks at an imaginary audience after every song. I wish I could have recorded the moment when he threw a pick and 2-3 people just looked at it and did nothing.

Grave - Fucking rocked the house, they had the only stage divers of the night. At one point the band busted out Black Sabbath and Punchy jumped up on stage and started singing, which was awesome.

Dark Funeral - I thought they were pretty meh but I'm not a black metal fan. During their set I had the thought that black metal guitarist must have never learned how to palm-mute.

Morbid Angel - Completely amazing. The best live sound I've ever heard, I can't believe how well the mix sounded. Everyone was spot on, the whole band sounded incredibly. I stood mostly in-front of Trey during their entire set. He was all smiles during the show. Being able to see him play guitar from a few feet away was awesome, it was mesmerizing. After seeing Trey live I can understand why so many people try to imitate him. When he starts playing it really does seem like he goes somewhere else. I really wish I could have met him.

Seeing them for the first time is quite an experience. Mine was for the Covenant tour. I'm glad you liked them. Considering how loud they are, it's amazing that they always manage to have good sound. Did they play the same set that we've seen/heard lately?
I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.

Same set as usual. They opened with Immortal Rites, which was a surprise to me because I was expecting Rapture. They also played Angel of Disease and Bil Ur-Sag. Closed with God of Emptiness/World of Shit.

Very cool, and that bit about nobody caring about that dude's pick made me

I think it has been about six years since the last time I even had a chance to see MA live, and I can't wait to see Trey in particular do his thing. His guitar playing is taken to an entirely new level when you can see it right in front of you and actually feel the low-end frequencies swirling around it.

Which Sabbath song did Grave play? I still haven't checked out their latest album, but I have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

conservative_heretic should be along at some point with a show report, some video, and bits of conversation that's enough to make me take back what I said to So Callous about what a new Morbid Angel record would be like.
