This definitely bitches up my shit. Last time David was booted they released a super aggressive riff fest, and it seems like this is the case again, but with a bit of the gateways and heretic flair. I hope there's a ton of songs like formulas had.

Yea I mean its an overall thing for me. for example the guitars just don't come alive.

I did it with a few including rapture for example, and really those old school productions are like frikkin m'agic.

The guitars are the focal for me. Their upper mid range and highs are odd to me. Also the vox have a lisp quality. That can happen with de-essing poorly. Somebody said the itune version sounds better. I don't doubt that but has it ever been the case where streaming formats like YouTube sounded SO different?? I don't know, I'm gona check out the iTunes version.

The production is a bit wonky, but the material is awesome. I'm excite as fuck.

this is always a silly argument to me, spotify (and the youtube quality is pretty good these days) has really high quality playback and i doubt you're going to hear much of a difference on the cd vs spotify

it's not a terrible mix to me, it sounds fine and i can definitely jam to it, i'd just prefer the drummers a little lower in the mix so the guitars can be more noticeable. i wish it had more a raw sounding mix like formulas and a little less digital sounding.

i like the song, kind of sounds like something i would have expected to hear after gateways or formulas.

sound quality is perfectly fine on that version, and the mix is inoffensive to me on first impression. it's definitely a lot cleaner, i think in some way it might be a reaction to heretic's reception

Listening with headphones makes me think this is another "brick-walled" mastering--everything set to maximum, which utterly destroys the dynamics and kills the cymbals. I haven't bought any new metal on vinyl in a while--does that medium suffer the same ill-effects from such mastering, or do labels use a different master source for LP production?

Regardless of any audio concerns, that song slays anything on "Illiud," which admittedly is a low bar, but still the old MA is back!

contemporary vinyl is really hit or miss. a lot of labels just cut them using the CD master (or worse; plain recordings for example is known to have used MP3 sources on some of their pressings) but there are some that actually do separate mastering jobs for digital and analog formats. unfortunately it's difficult to find detailed information on most releases, so it's a bit of a gamble.

Initial impressions are somewhat mixed though leaning more toward the positive. This is quite unlike material on the other albums.

I definitely agree with what you're getting at. There is a complexity to it though, it might not be so black and white. In order for those streams to sound good, they must prepared to sound good. If you feed a stream a modern, loud CD wave file, they might sound pretty bad. In that case, there would be a world of difference. But if you have a properly prepared track specific to each stream platform, then there shouldn't be much difference OR at least not much difference in quality (versus aesthetic differences). IF the iTunes version sounds MUCH better, then the mastering process fell short some where, that is, the files were not properly prepped. If the iTunes sounds aesthetically, slightly different, but the arguable technical issues are still there, then you're point is valid and obviously proven. I can't know until I hear it.

Why the hell would a label just put mp3s onto vinyl? That is just ridiculous...incredibly lazy and money hungry.

Given the last Hate Eternal album I heard the mix here is better than I expected. No point nit picking at every little discrepancy. It's impossible to please everyone on this issue. Sure a few things could be changed but it's heavy, the song is pretty good. It's fine guys, enjoy the fucking song.

First listen and the middle part really did it for me. Great riffs and energy. Steve's vocals are great and could actually be a little more up front for me, a little bit louder.

Few things I didn't like straight off the bat:
Balance of the drums. Hi hats sound a bit thin and phasey/hissy. The kickdrums are way better than on I but take a lot of low fequency space and because of this the low guitar parts get a bit overwhelmed. The snare has a nice chestiness to it but I miss a bit of snare bottom/crisp. Like on F? That snare is just perfect and sits so well in the mix.

Overall the mix of this song feels a little like a choke hold. It could be that that's exactly what they were after and it certainly makes it aggressive. Although a bit more space to let things breathe like on C or even G would be nice IMHO.

Of course my taste has changed over the years and I definitely need more listens to the whole thing but to me, Morbid Angel's records always had something magical in their sound (except for I) There was this space surrounding the instruments yet they still came at you full on. I don't have that same link to it with this sound (yet).

Does the song end with the solo or is there more?

Also. Those drumstick hits should've been muted IMO... just a little bit of silence would give that break more impact.

Btw, Rutan did mix this record, right? I can only see "produced by", and of course he recorded it too. Definitely sounds like a Rutan mix.

My opinion doesn't matter at all, I was just sharing my initial thoughts on the mix. And those thoughts are purely my taste. The band signed off on the mix so they must be happy with it. And it is a solid mix and I am a fan of Rutan's work. I'm just not sure if I'm a fan of this song's mix in partticular when it comes to a band like Morbid Angel. And who gives a shit about my taste or opinion? But then again, that's what discussions and forums are for.
