Formulas FDR
Is this right? Earache's OnDemand pressing of Formulas is an FDR release?

Re: Formulas FDR
I have some repressing of it, not sure which, but I'd sell it and get the FDR if this is legit.

Re: Formulas FDR
I'd like to know if the mastering is any different than the CD. Formulas never sounded too compressed to me.

Re: Formulas FDR
Mastering should be the same. Just higher sample rate and bitdepth (cuz this wasn't completely done on tape. I think even just pro tools).

Re: Formulas FDR
If the intention is "Full Dynamic Range" then mastering will differ. For example, limiters might be used lightly or not at all.

Re: Formulas FDR
I emailed Phil at Earache asking about it. he said this:
Yes, that's correct. We didn't specifically say that they'd be Full Dynamic Range at the start in case there was an issue finding the tapes or they were damaged, or something like that. But we've got the tape and the audio's currently being mastered in the same way that all of our other FDRs have been done.
Thanks,
Phil

Re: Formulas FDR
Cool, so it would be interesting to know what that "same way" entails and how different it is from the original CD release.Abzu wrote:I emailed Phil at Earache asking about it. he said this:

Re: Formulas FDR
someone should ask him that. Definitely not rebuying unless it's gonna sound vastly different from the CD. Disappointed with earache's constant sale-boosting gimmicks.

Re: Formulas FDR
It shouldn't be "vastly" different as you say. That would be just weird. Differences like these are subtle and dependend on your playback system.

Re: Formulas FDR
Yea, I've level matched A/B'ed and the FDRs are not vastly different. To me FDR would be vastly different for modern mixes because of the drastic use of compression and limiting. That's where you will hear a huge difference - OR should any way.
