dick dale died

Post by happiness and harmony »

81 years old :tear: apparently he had been sick for some time

most people only know him as the pulp fiction hard-on bearer, which is fair enough. but he invented surf rock, started playing in the 50s, and was a huge influence on amplifier development and also live PA setups, largely because he needed to play louder for the number of people who came to see him in southern california

i got to see him at the cotton club in 1999. at the time the cotton club was a teensy venue beneath the 2500-seat tabernacle, where megadeth was performing the same night (and to about the same number of people). he fucking shredded, talked shit about megadeth, laughed like a maniac, and got a bunch of women in leather pants to come up to the front and start dancing, which induced everyone else to do the same. it was spectacular

rip dick dale. you listen now

not too familiar with his music but can appreciate the influence and contributions to live music he's made.

RIP Dick Dale.

the story of his career for most of the last 20 odd years is an intensely sad (and extremely american) one. he toured 'til the end because it was the only way he could afford to pay for his medical bills to stay alive

he also stopped performing and touring for pretty
much the entire 70s after almost losing his leg in a horribly strange freak accident plus infection. was very nearly a precedent for jeff hanneman :oldryan:
