Hey skinner and shadowalk (and those that like heavy deftones):

8/10 in Metal Hammer. This part is especially interesting:

"(This Link Is Dead) is probably the most out-and-out fruital Deftones have sounded since When Girls Telephone Boys on their 2003 self-titled album. It's such a delight to hear the band rage with such uncompromising intensity again, so good in fact that it's the highlight of the record."

Stef is 100% back. The choruses on pompeji, spell of mathematics, radiant city, error, and especially ceremony are catchy as fuck. In a good way. Chino is pissed on this record. Pretty certain he’s calling out the fans on this link is dead about how they aren’t as heavy anymore (shifty eyes at skinner and shadowalk)

There’s no sextape or digital bath softer type track on here either. Pieces of songs here or there but no full soft tracks. Unless you count ohms as one but I don’t.

I’ve already listened to this 10+ times. I stand behind my statement that it’s the best since s/t. In heaviness and bleak atmosphere. It’s a more sad, melancholic album. Pretty much the opposite of DE.

Same after the initial listens except urantia and ohms switched spots. I don’t dislike urantia but the main riff is kind of boring and something about chinos vocal melodies in the verses kind of bug me. Sounds smashing pumpkins-ish but not in the best way imo. The chorus and bridge are good though.

Ceremony, Pompeji, and Spell are some of my favorite deftones songs period. So good. The ending of spell how it breaks down into just drums and finger snaps is brilliant. End of Pompeji too.

The Ceremony chorus:

“So I’m leaving you tonight
It’s not fun here anymore
I’ll be joining the parade
Of the ghosts who came before”

gives me chills every time especially when it drops back in at the end of the bridge. My favorite moment on the record.

that doesn’t really surprise me ha. This link is dead was hyped up too much. Chino goes off the entire song but I wish the music was heavier to match his vocals. I get what they were going for but the riffs should’ve been busier/heavier.

Self titled is my second favorite after white pony. It’s outstanding. Saturday Night Wrist is underrated as fuck. DE and KNY each have some great songs but neither are top tier deftones to me. Gore was pretty bad. Aside from a couple tracks. And I can’t stand adrenaline really anymore.

Chino said in an interview Genesis originally had softer, sung vocals in the verses but he went back after it was recorded and decided on the screams. Good move for sure. And ohms the song chino said when steph sent him the demo 3 years ago it was 12 mins long and a lot slower and sludgy riff wise.

Also, if you’re down for the catchy choruses, how the hell is ceremony not your number 1? Or at least top 3? That chorus is the best and catchiest thing they’ve done since change, imo. Wish it was longer. At least one more chorus, probably two.

Chino said it’s about suicide. Which obviously now makes sense. My dumbass was thinking it was just a breakup song until he mentioned it in an interview.
