Metallica would be WAY different without the instrumentals

Post by Paste Human »

I was just listening to Orion and it occurred to me that without that track, "Call" and "To Live" they'd just be another speed metal band. Even though I'm not a huge fan of the non-Orion instrumentals they definitely give the other songs a much more interesting context.

while you are correct about the effect of the instrumentals, there is already so much texture and variety on studio albums number two through four that this–
they'd just be another speed metal band.
–just ain't so. there's really only two thrash / speed songs each on RTL (fight fire / trapped under ice), MOP (battery / damage) and AJFA (blackened / dyers). you could make an argument for a few other songs (disposable heroes is the first & strongest to come to mind) but really, kill em all is their most straight-up speed metal album & even it has a boatload of slower & more dynamic parts.

that said, the instrumentals are important and full of win. :thingy:

I know I worded the OP wrong, but you seem to have gotten the point and that's all that matters.

there is some neat stuff on death magnetic and i respect the number of young bands they take on the road with them but i would not use the word "awesome" to describe present-day metallica

you mean like the time they could've taken any band they wanted to on tour with them and chose godsmack?
i mean since death magnetic taking out the sword and baroness and gojira and high on fire and other bands that i cant be bothered to remember right now. plus all the european festivals and such like

thats not the point though the point is it would be neat to go back in time and see godflesh and metallica on tour in 1992 cause metallica was going for the throat and had a massive crunch to the live guitars (plus james growled instead of...whatever it is he's doing nowadays) and godflesh would have just been :fuckoff: to everyone

in a similar sense it would have been amazing to see kyuss and metallica in 1993, except that tour actually happened

or to see FNM open for the metallica / guns n roses debacle in the summer of 92

it would have worked i tell you!
kirk will always get bonus points for citing godflesh as being one of the heaviest bands ever
(and to also steer to the left off topic: )

Patton also says this.

On the Angel Dust tapes (that never got released).

They ask him what he's looking forward to with upcoming releases for that year (92?).

It's on one of these vids.
