i've said it before, that black metal is the only genre that continues to evolve while others have stagnated.
I think there is a lot of hope for black metal's future.

i respectfully disagree with the above post
black metal has become more aesthetically diverse, i'd say, but ultimately we end up with a whole mess of new bands finding slightly different ways to say absolutely nothing worthwhile.

i agree with lummy.
the black metal community here in San Francisco is way bigger than the death metal. theres lots of great local bands. most of the progressive/experimental stuff is ambient and noise shit though. But the local black metal bands here all play old school style BM. Its quite enjoyable. My friends has been working on some killer black metal that is insane. his riffs are really unique and complex. once he gives me a copy ill post it or something.

perhaps.this so called message isn't nearly as important to me as just the overall music and the atmosphere or emotions that it evokes.

thats a good point. metal in general is having a tough time nowadays finding anything worthwhile to say. the genres been banging us in the head with the "do what thou wilt" message for a long time now. People who i talk to who are up and coming and writing music have all taken a sort of sci fi turn and are sending messages of a more "psychedelic" nature, you could say. do you know what i mean by that?

and i think this is where BM excels. there arent many DM bands out there who invoke any sort of diverse atmosphere outside of the standard DM atmosphere that has been prevalent for some time now.

i can dig, but to me, i think what separates the good from the great is a binding together of all those elements. to clarify on my original point, i don't mean to say that i think modern black metal is necessarily bad, but rather that it suffers from a lack of greatness.

yeah, i agree absolutely -- it's kind of devolved into an ocean of that individualistic sentiment, which provides a natural lead-in to the more ridiculous suicidal/depression themes, which have been prevalent for a number of years now. that to me is absolutely the antithesis of the spirit and atmosphere of the older waves of black metal, which has always had a sort of awe-inspiring quality to it.
i'm not quite in tune with what the psychedelic themes are all about, but certainly, it sounds promising compared to the above.

by psychedelic i mean what you were talking about. the awe-inspiring, empowering themes. In a similar line with the Pagan BM in a sense that it is empowering as an anti-capitalist, anti-westernization, anti-colonization, anti-christian, et cetera. manner. Themes of the cosmos and such. think Voivod or Mithras or something of that ilk. And sci-fi in the sense of warnings of a vice squad-state dystopian future, a Philip K Dick book in black metal form or something.

xasthur has been around for quite some time, releasing more or less the same thing over and over and over... as far as depression black metal goes xasthur is one of the better examples, but you don't need much more than one album to get the full experience.
DSO is super fancy, so long as you can put aside the whole 'orthodox black metal' nonsense.
amd like a couple others mentioned, blut aus nord is good stuff as well, but skip odinist.

Some BM today is good, most of it is horrible. A lot just try to copy Burzum, or Immortal.
Xasthurs "Through Bloodstained Mirrors" is a masterpiece though.

I really dislike most of the bands mentioned in this thread, and the ones I do like I consider just "decent", meaning enough not to bore me. I can't think of a single bm band that can really really peak my interest.

you, sir, speak the Everlasting Words of WIsdom (tm). this "globalization" of the metal scene coupled with the increased effortlessness of recording and distributing material has a kind of "diluting" effect on the overall quality of material released today...
and this depressive "black metal" thing is kinda like the fruital/technical death metal thing... they (try to) copy Suffocation without really "getting it" (much like suffo themselves nowadays ), just like the former are trying to copy Burzum (and strid and forgotten woods...) and failing worse than cryptopsy on a regular basis. both have some quality artists, but the overwhelming majority is pure 100% shit and the unfortunate thing is that both subgenres are very popular today, especially young people
also, two thumbs down for Xasthur... the most consistently boring "artist" of today

Re: most interesting black metal band around today?
they stand out in the sense that they've gained popularity without much help from the media or other shit.
just the music. I didn't even know of their image until a few months after I started listening to them and
seeing that and some of their live videos made e want to see them even more than I had already wanted to.
I think they are pretty legit in what they do as well.
