new mastodon album late march
a month earlier
two months from now
According to scrapple's iTunes store in Australia, Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON will release their new studio album, "Emperor Of Sand", on March 31 via Reprise Records.
The track listing for the effort is as follows:
01. Sultan's Curse
02. Show Yourself
03. Precious Stones
04. Steambreather
05. Roots Remain
06. Word To The Wise
07. Ancient Kingdom
08. Clandestiny
09. Andromeda
10. Scorpion Breath
11. Jaguar God
The lead song, "Sultan's Curse", which was previewed Wednesday night on MASTODON's official web site, can already be purchased via the Australian iTunes store.
MASTODON's follow-up to 2014's "Once More 'Round The Sun" album was once again helmed by famed producer Brendan O'Brien, who first collaborated with the band on their 2009 groundbreaking concept album "Crack The Skye".
MASTODON recorded the new disc at the Quarry in Kennesaw, Georgia before moving to Henson Studios in Los Angeles for the mixing stage.
MASTODON drummer-singer-lyricist Brann Dailor recently told Rolling Stone that the band's new album grapples with themes of mortality and was inspired by seeing close friends and family diagnosed with cancer in recent years.
"Time is a very big theme of the album," Dailor said. "How much time do we have left? What are we doing with our time?"
"I get a little movie going in my head about a situation and I start writing about that," he added. "I try really hard to make it personal and relatable and not too esoteric. It's embarrassing to write lyrics. I'm a drummer, and I sing a little bit. Together we tackle these things and we figure it out — how to be this vocally driven band that has three people singing that don't want to sing."
He went on to say: "It's about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that. I didn't want to be literal about it. But it's all in there. You can read between the lines."
Regarding the musical direction of MASTODON's next album, guitarist Bill Kelliher told GuitarMania: "It's a little bit of the same as the last album, but I think it goes even deeper in certain areas — a couple of more psychedelic parts, a little more technical parts. There are a couple of new places we haven't gone before. So it's just kind of a continuation of the last record to me, but even deeper."
MASTODON has confirmed a spring U.S. headline tour, which will kick off on April 14 in Missoula, Montana, with support from EAGLES OF DEATH METAL and RUSSIAN CIRCLES. The tour also includes stops at several festivals, including the Carolina Rebellion on May 5.

I like a couple tracks on sun (tread lightly, motherload, high road minus the gay chorus lyrics and melody, and Halloween) the rest are shit. The hunter is a better record.

Re: new mastodon album late march
found the ein lyricos:
Tired and Lost
No One to Trust
Who Is There to Give the Push
All I Have Learned
Straighten the Curve
Like a Circle to Return
The long embrace
The smell of dirt and roses
Under the sun
No sign of breath or water
I fall asleep under blankets of stars
Ice Hit You Cold
Heat Of Surprise
Bending Mind Can't Realize
Faith Is In Me
End I Can See
Tears Are Strong As Ten Thousand Tongues
My Sweet Mirage
I Bathe In Sacred Waters
I Kiss The Sky
Floating In Sultans Daughters
Memories Of Loved Ones Only Passing Me By
Oceans Of Sand And Rust
Give Way And Yield My Wake
They're Waiting Inside
They're Waiting To Wash Your Eyes Out
Their Hands Are Alive
Alive With A Fervent Anger
Your Feet Have Been Tied And Your Tongue In Your Hand
Death Of A Thousand Ravens
You're Down On Your Knees
Blind As The Ancient Kingdom
Relive The Ages Of The Moon
Reeling The Water Close To You
i enjoy it even more now.

I'll reserve judgement until I hear the whole thing but this didn't quite catch me like the lead tracks off Once more 'round the sun did. A bit like Mastodon by numbers, though that still equals a positive equation .

Re: new mastodon album late march
not at all
ghost has made popular a specific grafting of pop vocal melodies onto aggressive-ish riffs where the resulting track was clearly written with the melodies in mind first, so the "metal" aspect of it seems like an afterthought, and is often laughable
there is precedent for show yourself with the motherload, as that chorus was mastodon's first huge foray into mega-pop territory
but show yourself is far less energetic than the motherload, and every ghost song i've ever heard is plodding and stale, and so i think of them
this is also why several of the tracks on hardwired remind me of ghost. the chorus of now that we're dead is so similar to the chorus of square hammer it's scary
like a ghost

Re: new mastodon album late march
good god the new track is awful
i think the ghost comparison is apt, but the song overall sounds like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be mastodon or ghost so they just tried to be both. they're clearly trying to break it down in trademark fashion from 1:33-2:17, but it's completely phoned in and never actually goes anywhere, so they just bring it back to ghost town to close it out. the result is a massive, awful failure.

i also wouldn't say this is a bad song, more like an one
troy's vocal line i rather like
it's just so obvious that they were trying to write another pop-tastic motherload. but their hearts do not sound into it

the first three tracks are all wonderful riff tours, and i've already debunked your "high road chorus is out of tune" belief several times so i don't need to do it againjorsh wrote:What are these "hot jams" on omrts you speak of?
chimes at midnight is a glorious interstellar journey that would not be out of place on cts
asleep in the deep is a high-octane aerobics workout with a verse that would not be out of place on leviathan
ember city is what show yourself wants to sound like, delicious urgency on that track
and halloween has probably the grandest outro of any song on the last two albums. seeing them do it live helped
the only songs on that album that i think are or worse are aunt lisa, for obvious reasons
and the title track, which has neat riffs going on and a neat enough chorus but really dull vocals from brent and ultimately just goes nowhere. every other song on the album builds to something bigger; the title track just shows up, nods, and leaves. not much to grab hold of there i feel

and i purchased it this week
so i will give it and omrts a few listens and report my findings

Asleep in the deep is ass. Feast your eyes is boring as hell. Aunt Lisa is poop. Words can't explain how much I hate the high road chorus. The rest of the track is neat though.

Re: new mastodon album late march
i listened to them back to back earlier
the good songs on the hunter have stuck with me and are solid work. all the heavy lifting is an excellent fucking song, best on the album for sure
a touch below that are stargasm, which is nice and heavy but also relaxed and confident;
octopus has no friends, which needs a definite article in its title but otherwise is goofy as hell and also onomatopoeic a plus for an animal song;
dry bone valley, another masto-pop song and a successful one (i forgot about it when we were talking about show yourself)
and spectrelight, which sounds kind of tacked-on after the dogshit duo of thickening and creature lives but is saved by scott kelly and a riff that sounds just different enough from island to be worthwhile
plus black tongue
all in all i think my main criticism is that the hunter sounds like thirteen somewhat random songs they threw together in rough order, in sharp contrast to the three tight, cohesive concept albums to come out immediately before it. some of the songs are turds and some of them are b-side quality, and when you've been putting out these really thoughtful packages it's a tough transition for these ears
omrts isn't a concept album it's shorter & feels more like a curated group of songs. and i submit that both the highs and lows are higher than on the hunter. aunt lisa is the worst song on there but i'd take it over creature lives, thickening, or blasteroid, which starts off great but becomes erratic and dumb
