Opinions besides ninny and I? I know dustys listened to it but for some reason he has to listen to a record 77 times before he gives an opinion. Weird beard.

Re: the emperor...of sand
i listened to it once through on friday while doing dishes and entertaining my son with his kitchen toys
my first impression is that it sounded like a heavy metal aerobics soundtrack from 1987
and that jaguar god was really underwhelming

Re: the emperor...of sand
yeah jaguar god is really pretty dull i think, it sounds like last baron lite
and one of brent's solos in another song (i think it's roots remain?) sounds almost identical to a stretch of the solo in the sparrow & really close to the last solo in the czar as well. i am picking up a definite "phoning it in" vibe from his contributions
all of the other songs i like; this is a good & cohesive album. even the dreaded show yourself makes sense in concert
i am excited to jam this with the lyric sheet when the album finally arrives in the mail three days late warner brothers slacking off thanks to digital downloads

i got my copy in the mail yesterday
and then i got another copy
i think maybe you got a copy when you ordered tickets; that is the only thing that makes sense
in which case i paid for an album unnecessarily, which annoys me
anyway i now have two copies of emperor of sand
so if anyone wants one, i could send it to you via the post
but only one

Word to the wise
Roots Remain
Steambreather
Jaguar God
Sultans Curse
Scorpion Breath
Ancient Kingdom
Clandestine (refuse to call it by its stupid ass name)
Precious Stones
Andromeda
Show Yourself
The only stinker is poo yourself. Otherwise it's solid ass fuck. Troys repetition of "it never ends" is mildly annoying that's why andromeda is so low

jaguar god is fucking mint. i got it on listen one. its a curious one for sure. at first, it was the album highlight for me on first listen. with subsequent listens it dipped to the middle of the pack. now like 2 weeks later its back at the top again. listening to the solo right now as i type this. fuck. so good.

i keep finding new things to like and admire about literally every other song on the album except this one
the bridge into the solo and then the riff / solo combination in ancient kingdom is currently my favorite moment on the album, it makes me feel so warm and fuzzy

Re: the emperor...of sand
well that show was fucking incredible
missed russian circles because the line to get in went allll the way down the street, around the block and back the other way to the rear of the venue. this was because they had metal detectors out front, which the hard-on bearer behind me said he had never seen in 50 shows at the warfield. we speculated that it was something edom requested also while we were in line jesse hughes came by and started to go into the strip club next door before someone told him he had to be onstage in 20 minutes
anyway russian circles is a great band so missing them left me with the taste of poo in my mouth
edom were a little shticky for my taste but really fun; several times i found myself just laughing at jesse's ridiculous antics. (after four or so songs he told a story of how he was once a stripper in san francisco. so he is kind of like phil anselmo in the storytelling regard )
they opened with i only want you, which brent came out and played on. and they closed with speaking in tongues and did it sort of how queens does regular john, with a really long dueling guitar solo in the middle, except jesse broke a guitar string so they followed that with a combination bass-and-drum solo and then picked the song back up to finish. it was a rendition
oh and dave catching is on tour with them as the second guitarist, which was also
mastodon played the best of the six times i've seen them. they were super duper tight and very high energy. troy was his usual beastly self. bill was way more animated than usual. sobriety serves him well, it would seem. the crowd was the most excited and roughest i have ever seen at a mastodon show. and since i hadn't been on the floor for any show since meshuggah in 2013 it actually felt good to push people around and get pushed around some
as an aside from the other thread, feast your eyes was a horse race live. jorsh you need to go to minneapolis or something and check them out, you will change your opinion of that song
all of the new songs were massive, with the exception of show yourself which was fine. it was the only song of the entire set that people didn't go 100% apeshit for
and they added steambreather to the set
mastodon played:
sultan's curse
divinations
the wolf is loose
crystal skull
ancient kingdom
bladecatcher
black tongue
colony of birchmen
ember city
megalodon
andromeda
oblivion
feast your eyes
show yourself
precious stones
roots remain
chimes at midnight
steambreather
clandestiny
mother puncher
cycle of cysquatch
march of the fire ants
