Re: the flaming lips
They have some great albums in their discography but the last couple are really hard to take
Wait.....
Fuck this band after 1995. straight unnecessary. They probably shouldn't even exist as humans after 95. Only their first couple records have any artistic merit.
PRODUCT OF THE TIMES MAN, PRODUCT OF THE TIMES!

Re: the flaming lips
i am pleasantly surprised that rhino didn't post the other, bigger hit from transmissions
i love this band and i agree with jorsh about the last couple
i'm kind of torn on the new one. oczy mlody does have some great moments musically, but lyrically was unable to escape the miley cyrus bullshit that's consumed wayne over the last several years. their last unqualified success of an album was embryonic, which is almost 8 years old now
i guess that isn't entirely unusual though, their whole career has had stretches of questionable output. the gap between hear it is and priest driven ambulance, for example. and also the one between yoshimi and embryonic. and also zaireeka, which is probably neat if you can manage to assemble four CD players and four sets of speakers in the same room with three friends to assist with synchronizing playback, but loses points for being so unbelievably impractical
when they're on though this band is capable of making some goddamned incredible tunes

Re: the flaming lips
to be honest there is a lot of their stuff that i haven't heard. i listen to pretty much from telepathic up to clouds taste metallic, i need to venture on more than those ones there

Re: the flaming lips
stylistically the stuff after clouds is a big departure, soft bulletin is a massively ornate pop album and yoshimi isn't too far removed from that style either. at war with the mystics was the last of them trying to mine that particular vein, it has some great tunes and some really bad ones. embryonic is by far my favorite of their later period though, it is dark and fuzzed out and bleak and excellent as hell

Still jamming embryonic like nobodies business. In the 2 years since this thread, it was becoming my favorite of theirs.

emrbyonic turns 10 this year still holds up though and still my favorite of their post-2000 run. been meaning to listen to more of them lately, i'm on a trial subscription for tidal and they've got most of their discography in the master quality audio catalog

Re: the flaming lips
They used to put out on a great show back in the early 90 'z
I had the opportunity to see them play on norman back in 95 when Vaseline was all the rage. And yes, the early music is the only good music.
