Re: villains leaked
Only listened to the first 5 tracks.
Feet don't fail me and domesticated animals didn't really do much for me. Fortress has the lead for worst song on the album. Head like a haunted house would be better off on an eodm album. The way you used to do is the only winner from the bunch so far.

i think jorsh is way less cool these days actually. it seems like now he is trying to be a super chill rock and roll icon whereas he used to just be joshua m homme, who left silly recordings on mastodon albums and inverted clichés with a madman's precision

Re: villains leaked
bought the album today. a couple anecdotes....
1. after peeling the plastic off and opening the cd I was horrified to discover one single, double-sided insert. thats it. no lyrics :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I absolutely, absolutely (cant stress enough) how much i hate when bands omit lyrics/thank you in cds. the lyrics and artwork are the fucking reason I still purchase cds. cheap ass bastards
2. after listening to the entire record while cruising around fargo tonight, in the dark (which i figured would enhance the experience, thus the record) alas, it did not. villains is definitely the worst qotsa record to date, sadly.
3. the shocker while listening to this tonight in the ride was that hideaway, my least favorite track on the leak, is now my favorite on the record! this song in p.articular was greatly improved by the drive. evil has landed is #2, the way you used to do is #3, feet dont fail me is #4, un re-born again is #5. the others can go in the garbage.
6/10. bad jorsh! bad queens!

i haven't had enough free time to listen, but i did buy it this afternoon. the garbage packaging is unfortunately par for the course. clockwork was the same way, slipcase outer, jewel case, half-page insert. i don't know if that's the lure to get the spendy vinyl edition or what, but i ain't about to throw down the cash for that shit unless they go back and record it 40 years ago

Re: villains leaked
so it's been a little while since this album leaked onto the internet, and also i have my precious high-quality physical copy for high-quality listens
and i have to say that ultimately i'm surprised and a little annoyed that jorsh decided "we have to make this album a dancing album, which involves 'screwing over our old sound,' awesome let's do it." because queens have always been pretty dance-tastic? his whole MO back in the day was that the band should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls, and that's also why he named it "queens of the stone age," because "kings of the stone age" was caveman-sounding and lame. and all of those things have been awesome guiding principles since basically 1997.
off the top of my head there are at least one or two easily danceable songs on every album, and that figure increases quickly the closer you get to the present. by the time you hit era vulgaris it's basically every other song (turning on the screw, i'm designer, misfit love, and make it wit chu all channel the same sort of dark / dance queens vibe, as does the b-side title track). this is also true of like clockwork. i think that by paying too much attention to that side of things, they forgot to do what they were already good at, which is balance them with other elements to make unexpected beautiful noise
there are touches and flourishes typical of queens all over villains and they make for some amazing individual moments. the bounce and groove in feet don't fail me (and the whole middle of the song). cab calloway's ghost guesting on the way you used to do. the barks and quiet snarls all over domesticated animals. the last two minutes of un-reborn again. the pain on jorsh's voice on hideaway, &c &c there are tons of others
but overall i think this album is something of a mess. it's the first time that the songs don't all make sense (even if i don't care for the sense they make), where the lyrics are trite or cringe-worthy in spots (the biggest shock for me), and where the album is not greater than the sum of its parts (as was the case with rated r and like clockwork). i will always respect jorsh for his willingness to try new things & look a fool, it makes for exciting music & often brilliant stuff. plus for me he's way past the point where i could possibly stop listening. "oh no villains is shit, i'm done with queens now." he's proven himself; there is always something worthwhile
i think lullabies is now my second least-favorite queens though sorry to say

Yeah, as for me, I like this album less the more I listen. It should be the other way around. Like clockwork was fucking brilliant. Now to this, it's frustrating and mildly annoying.

Re: villains leaked
like clockwork benefits from all this implied darkness and heaviness and mystery because it's so goddamn short. every time i get to the end i'm like "fuck, it's over already?" and then i listen to it again. a masterpiece of manipulation i say
and yes i know it's only three minutes shorter than villains but 10 songs in 45 minutes goes by much quicker than 9 songs in 48, which is near metallica-level indulgence

the thing i can't get over is none of these jump out at me as clearly the best or most awesome or most interesting and neat song. there has always been at least one starting with the first few listens & usually that one changes several times. here, i like the way used to do more & more but it's just a gradual thing, i think it's a very well-crafted and catchy song, it doesn't make me jump out of my seat
the evil has landed is great but my enthusiasm has mellowed considerably, awesome 70s vibes but nothing they've not done before
head like a haunted house is trying way too hard to be rockabilly cool, it is a strained song to these ears
villains is two beautiful parts that don't go together
fortress is not nearly as sweet as everyone seems to be making it out to be. it is not the type of advice i thought jorsh would give his daughter mostly because i have heard it before
it genuinely bothers me how so-so i find this album

i can't help but imagine hiring the uptown funk hard-on bearer as the album's producer played a significant role in this direction, especially looking at his album production creditshorse dealies wrote:and i have to say that ultimately i'm surprised and a little annoyed that jorsh decided "we have to make this album a dancing album, which involves 'screwing over our old sound,' awesome let's do it." because queens have always been pretty dance-tastic? his whole MO back in the day was that the band should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls, and that's also why he named it "queens of the stone age," because "kings of the stone age" was caveman-sounding and lame. and all of those things have been awesome guiding principles since basically 1997.

maybe, although I think jorsh is stubborn enough to go his own way in the end
but my point is the elements he suggests they had to bring out for villains were there all along, and it is strange and dumb to talk like they are brand-new
