Boundary-pushing metal bands
Uni777 asked for a thread on this after I mentioned some.
So a few that come to my mind are:
Oranssi Pazuzu
Ved Buens Ende (early 90's and way ahead of their time)
Deathspell Omega
Ulcerate
Dodecahedron
Portal
Full of Hell
The Body
Hexvessel
Misþyrming
Alkerdeel
Gnaw Their Tongues
Bunkur
Verbum Verus
Terra Tenebrosa
Anthroprophh
Obelyskkh
True Widow

The body/full of hell collaboration album last year was incredible. I know a new one just came out in the last few weeks but I haven't had a chance to listen yet.

I would also say Chelsea Wolfe even though I don't consider her metal. But her doom influenced tracks are a bit maybe...

Re: Boundary-pushing metal bands
i agree with that decidedly not metal but a supremely heavy vibe in her music. like the moment between death and recognition of death

Does Arcturus count? I've always liked their style and I'm quite interested in the 'boundary' of metal that's being pushed on their end, so to speak.

Oranssi Pazuzu have been one of my favorite bands for several years now - would love to see them in person some day.
