i figured they would just sort of peter out and get more and more embarrassing, with tom retiring and kerry choosing to continue and adding younger replacement band members where necessary

you cannot kill what is already dead. Slayer, just like 99,9999% of the bay area folk from the 90ies, was done like 25 years ago. they're still an okay live unit when they don't play anything recorded after 1995 but...
