Metal Archives - No longer accepting new bands!
Quite a shock to read this today

100% COMPLETE: NO LONGER ACCEPTING NEW BANDS / 2018-04-01 00:23
Hello everyone!
It has been close to 16 years since we launched this site, never expecting at the time that it would grow the way it did. We are very proud of having helped the community build this amazing resource and we appreciate everyone's hard work over the last decade and a half or so.
But all good things must come to an end. We currently have over 120,000 bands, more than we ever thought possible. That is more than enough to declare our database 100% complete. Safe to say, no other resource comes close to being as thorough and comprehensive. Considering the continuing dilution of metal by outside musical influences, it is this unrivalled level of coverage of what may very well be called the birth, life and death of the genre that has led us to the decision to stop accepting new band entries as of today. When we started, we thought it'd be cool if we could get as many as 12,000 bands listed, some day in the distant future, but we have crushed this objective more than ten times over.
Don't worry, the Archives are not shutting down! Review submissions are still open, and for an undetermined amount of time, edits will still possible to fix whatever mistakes remain. But we have more than enough bands to be considered fully complete. All noteworthy bands have been catalogued, and then some. It's time to move on.
It's been a pleasure, everyone. \m/

Re: Metal Archives - No longer accepting new bands!
well that's retarded
i like what metal archives does but it's a really shit/outdated website, i'd love to see a modern alternative and have thought about making one myself but i don't know how i'd compensate anyone for dealing with entering bands or reviewing submissions, etc
if anyone has any ideas or genuine interest in that project i would actually love to move forward with it

I always knew they were elitist pricks. I know it’s April fools but this is actually believable.

The only thing they could really improve on is maybe having detailed bios on each band and maybe cataloging various news links. Other than that I think the layout of the site is fine.

I would appreciate a few more specifics about each band too, stuff like whether they perform live or not, and, also another section alongside the releases detailing any promo videos that they've made would be neat tooRufus T. Firefly wrote:zim wrote:well that's retarded

99% of the reviews are garbage and I'm guessing the forum is still nothing but people listing shit, but it's a great site in terms of quickly finding basic reference points.zim wrote:well that's retarded

If nothing else they could probably stand to lose some elements of what they have in terms of things like trivia and bios, or better yet just link to full fledged pages dedicated to that sort of thing. Not that it's difficult to ignore the shortcomings of metal archives.
I had kind of forgotten about it until now, but there was a somewhat similar site that went up around the same time, except a bit more pared down and focused. It looks like they stopped accepting additions quite a while ago.
