To this day, I’m still amazed at how bad this album turned out. I am the biggest Metallica fanboy you’ll ever find, but this I just cant grasp. It’s as if they deliberately tried to write badly, really!

It has an aggressive undertone indeed. But the songs are too long, written badly and a production that sucks. Especially that tin garbage lid of a snare drum.

I think st anger was a subconscious placeholder, coming out of the fire and turmoil of their recent past, leaving the "old world" behind while the revolution of their creativity was at a pivotal point; they were changing and modernizing, and I think for the better. DM as the evidence and start of a new metallica era.
