When I was more into extreme metal as a youngster, this band really never clicked but the last couple of years I've really began to appreciate them, incredible band.

I still listen to Human once or twice per month, and go down a Death wormhole on youtube about as often. Still remember buying Live in L.A. on DVD at Suncoast back in '01 or soRufus T. Firefly wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9_9y9zBRVQ

The re-issues they made a few years back were friggin awesome. I bought the Human and Individual albums in London at the time and man what a purchase. The sound is excellent, unbelieveable players all of them.

i have been meaning to re-evaluate death, i really was over them after the many-years-long BUHHH CHUCK INVENTED DEATH METAL circlejerk after he died and never really gave them another shot. i think there's been enough distance now where i can probably give them a fair shake, just need the time to devote. this will probably be a 2020 project

I knew I was aware of something like this although I never really cared since I really did like Death even when Chuck was alive.Hitoshura wrote:i really was over them after the many-years-long BUHHH CHUCK INVENTED DEATH METAL circlejerk after he died
Was this similar to the 'praise' that Linkin Park is getting right now because their whiny singer killed himself?

I appreciate and understand what Chuck and Death meant to the genre, its fans and fellow bands. But I never really cared for the Death at all. Not my cup o tea.

Re: Death really was on a whole-nother level
I had kind of forgotten about that phenomenon, but thinking back it was a pretty annoying trend on metal forums. Same goes for the heavy handed Chuck died of AIDS (funny of an angle as it was) chorus from the opposing point of view.Hitoshura wrote:i have been meaning to re-evaluate death, i really was over them after the many-years-long BUHHH CHUCK INVENTED DEATH METAL circlejerk after he died and never really gave them another shot. i think there's been enough distance now where i can probably give them a fair shake, just need the time to devote. this will probably be a 2020 project
The way I see it the first two albums were phenomenal for managing to achieve a sense of catchyness without sacrificing much in the way of the core grizzly death metal aesthetics. Spiritual Healing never made much sense to me, but after that point Chuck made a career out of surrounding himself with incredibly talented musicians and I think struck a pretty good balance between showcasing technical ability within compelling songs while keeping everything coherent and listenable.
I think his biggest fault was the dependence on predictable song structures. After a while I think it kind of sucks the life out of music that is otherwise exceedingly vibrant.

Re: Death really was on a whole-nother level
I’m pretty much a lifelong Death listener. Human was one of the first CD’s I bought, in 93/94 and then I started working my way back. Death was huge in the dm scene over here, strangely. Got back into Death following Chuck’s demise and bought Perseverance. Flawless album tbh.
Their only misfire IMO was Spiritual, never figured that album out. Then again, the same album happens to be a favorite among many fans so...
