Neurosis started in the 80’s but in the 90’s they were definitely ahead of their time, inspiring future stoner, doom, slug and drone bands.

it doesn't help that they haven't tried anything new since digimortal really. archetype is awesome and there are some fucking awesome tracks on the last couple albums but the style, the themes, the delivery are all what they were already doing in 1998

heartwork has always sounded like it's from the future to me, but i don't think you could really call it ahead of its time in terms of the state of metal when it came out

vahmpy is super correct with respect to neurosis, their gloryhole era output was just in like, another universe

talk talk's last album was in '91, it and its predecessor pretty much invented post-rock which didn't really pick up in earnest until the latter half of the decade. they are very much an 80s band though

They virtually invented the rap/rock formula made famous by the nu metal bands later on. They were mastering that crap in ‘92 and deserve a lot more credit than they’re given.
