i don't really care for guitar solos as much anymore

Post by zim »

i still enjoy the older ones i'm familiar with but i find myself meh'ing at most guitar solos these days. i don't even play lead that much when i play guitar these days, i'm much more interesting in rhythm now. i feel like so much of it is mindless wanking and adds nothing to the music.

moving from a garbage disposal back to the dumpster but it’s an improvement nonetheless

Of the top of my head, the only guitar solos I've dug were on the last Lost Soul album, this one in particular:

BUT it's the backing riffs that make it. The solo/solos follow the riffs quite closely at points and it all seems relevant, really ties the room together man.
i remember an interview with mustaine where he was asked about his feelings on solos. i'm paraphrasing, but he said something to the effect of "a good solo has to have a good song to go with it."

at the end of the day, it really is all about the riff.
Sure there's a lot of 'technical shredding' stuff out there now but a lot of them aren't really as interesting as say...the solos on the first few King Diamond records. Now that's soloing.

i appreciate short little solos much more than i used to. when they're used for accents instead of a set-piece it usually means the band has the good of the song in mind

with exception of Eruption, I really don't like many of the "look how good I am" solos
