i used to own a thunderverb 200 which was a really nice amp. great cleans and you could get pretty thrashy tones with it if you used a tube screamer

I've heard nothing but good things about Blackstars. One of the veteran thrash metal bands here in our local scene uses them (series one 100 I believe) and they've got mighty tone. How about ENGL or Randall? I really like the tone of the Powerball and I've been meaning to hear a Randall tone.

Re: in the market for a new head
man I used to have a Mesa Triple Rec, but for metal tones the Peavey 5150 beat it out for me. Now here it is years later when I've had my share of expensive amps, I try out the Peavey 6505+ (essentially still the 5150) and it just does it for me. Rhythm channel can get pretty clean, but is a great platform for pedals. Crunch channel is great for anything from blues to classic rock/metal. Lead channel is a high gain monster capable of lots of tones from any sort of extreme metal genre you can think of. Thanks to it's very versatile Resonance and Presence controls. Think very tight, but crushing distortion. It performed much better for me than most high gain tube amps I've tried at low volume. Still excels at high volume like any proper tube amp should, though. You probably couldn't go wrong with any of the ones you're thinking about, just thought I'd throw the Peavey into the mix.
Wouldn't hurt to give them all a run at your local music shop with your own guitar, though.

5150 is great for modern metal sound but mine was pretty crap for cleans.

I've noticed an improvement in that area with the 6505+

gonna hit this up next weekend: http://www.ampshow.com/
it's quite neat. takes place in a hotel, and each vendor has its own room so you can shut the door and test out the amp as loud as you want. cash will be brought along with as well so maybe i can score a deal on something.

this is the way! way more options out there these days than even just few years ago

Re: in the market for a new head
i'm not gonna make a purchase anytime soon - i saw the guitarist from ulcerate using one and it sounded absolutely terrifying and it had a certain grimmness about it
