recording guitar

Post by zim »

i have a scarlett focusrite 2i2 interface for recording and i experience a little bit of latency if i'm playing while the signal is being processed (amplitube, guitarig, etc).

so one thing i can do to combat the latency is play through my line 6 amp and run a cable from the direct out on the amp to the interface. this is cool because i can play through the interface/monitors with no latency but i'm wondering if there is anyway to play/listen with the amp signal but record a separate clean signal so i can run it through my vst stuff later.

currently searching but thought i'd post, anyone in the know?

i suppose a Y cable is the easiest solution but i've read that it can lead to a weaker signal, the search continues

I haven't recorded into my PC in forever. I used to use a Behringer UCA202 usb input and a sim amp and cabs.

I should tinker with it again.

i don't know if it being a stereo signal would fuck it up, but have you tried running from the direct monitor output into your amp? you can plug your guitar directly into the 2i2 for a completely dry recording that you can re-amp/process after the fact, and routing from the direct monitor out into your amp should give you a zero-latency signal that you can play with the 'correct' tones to aid in actually playing.

i have that same interface and there's no perceptible latency on the direct monitor output.

edit- i think direct monitoring works regardless of which output you're using so you should be able to just run a cable from one of the line outs into your amp. i only have headphones so i can't test it but pretty sure either way should work

I plan to record into my laptop using an external soundcard. M-Audio I've been told is a really good one.

Any thoughts?

honestly if you're just doing home recording 4 inputs is probably major overkill. the focusrite scarlett line is great, the 2i2 has 2 hybrid XLR/line inputs and costs $150 brand new. you can get the same thing with one input for $100 if you don't foresee the need to record two signals at once

My recording gear never really changed. POD XT Live plugged into my PC via USB and tracks are recorded via Adobe Audition.

so i originally saw a video of a hard-on bearer recording guitar and thought he was recording a clean signal while hearing a wet signal because he mentioned processing the the signal after he was done recording. i didn't realize he was talking about just eqs and stuff like that, not reamping or amp modeling. oops :oldryan:
