i feel like they are basically useless, it's either at 100 or 0 for me

yeah you can get different tones out of the volume knob but you could also adjust your amp/pedals and get something similar and/or better

Volume knobs do have uses in my case so I'll keep them although I've been thinking of taking out the tone knobs on mine. Now those are completely useless.

Develop a better ear.

Largely dependent on the pickup.

Set amp gain, pedals etc. with volume knob on 80-90%. Roll up to 100% for leads for extra sustain. Works for EVH, works for me. If you don't want even the tiniest bit of high end loss when rolling down, install a treble bleed on the pot for compensation. Been meaning to try this, but the upper high end loss helps with pickups that are already ultra bright like the dimarzio evolution and paf pro, even cuts hum to basically 0 IME. Not so good for overwound pickups that are dark-sounding. Useless for EMG's, but then again they are useless and noisy by design.

None of this will be very audible if you are using digital modelers.

Tone knobs however are fucking stupid and useless for anything other than sounding like pat metheny, and they suck high end and output even when they're on max. I always bypass them, easiest way is to just snip out the capacitor.

Single master volume + push pull for series/master coil tap configs is all I need.

turn them all the way up to the MAXIMUM

I like using them in a musical way. Volume swells or play certain parts with very mild distortion and turn it up to open up the saturation.

But with a normal volume pedal the distortion will only be quiter, not less.

The important thing is to slam as much signal through everything as possible.

speaking of volume knobs, @lavabug, that white ibanez is having this bizarre issue where the signal either starts at 100% and fades to 0% or is completely silent. i've read that this can be caused by a bad solder on the volume pots. any ideas? i'll probably re-solder it soon when i unsard.

Does it happen when you're rolling the knob? Never had problems with pots on either one, they are stock.

Wiggle/spin the cable around in the socket and see if it cuts in and out, if so, it's probably the jack that is shorting out, might just require removing the jack panel and making sure the wires have room and aren't touching anything. I do remember replacing the wires that went to the jack on the white RG, I used insulating tape on the ground wire because I had no heatshrink tubing on hand. :redneck:
