i got a drum kit

picked up this old rickety rogers USA from the late 70's/early 80's locally for $120. Spent a good few hours cleaning the rust and spider eggs out.

I know fuck all about drums, but my drummer pal assured me these are really good and a big notch above any starter kit.

Excited to start learning. :greenie:

Also, those are pool noodles inside the shells, for extra float-ability.

very cool lavabug, i got an electronic kit a few years ago and fell in love with it.

if you really start to get into it i recommend upgrading your kick pedal first and then maybe your snare

snare sounds pretty good, heads need to be replaced across the board though but they sound good to my drum-illiterate ears

double kick will definitely be a future purchase

this shit is fucking hard

I can so far lay down some ACDC beats and a bit of a skank beat but I start to cramp up after a little while. Need to fiddle with posture/positioning/throne height and all that stuff. Lots of metronome practice is happening.

Fortunately the house I rent is decently soundproof, kit is basically inaudible from outside according to the gf, so practicing into the evenings is not a problem. :xx:

Kinda insane to think world downfall was done entirely with a single kick. Playing that is the goal I have in mind, before I go buy a double. :p

it took me a super long time to be able to do a simple skank beat while doing the high hat at double time. really makes you appreciate how insane some death metal drummers are. i wish i still had the post from leon macey from a few years ago when i asked him for beginner drum advice, it was so awesome of him to reply with a bunch of tips.

but lots of metronome practice and time is the best. i also recommend learning rudiments early on http://vicfirth.com/40-essential-rudiments/

i will look into these rudiments

also fuck yeah double-time hihat on the skank beat is fucking hard

but I can keep down a skank and d-beats at 140+ bpm now without cramping too soon :ba:

it's kind of absurd how long it takes to actually get decent at that double time thing, eventually it becomes second nature and you'll wonder how you struggled with it

you should record yourself playing early on so you can track your progress
