Hmmmm.  I don't want people to get butthurt though.

I've seen this kind of system in use on other boards. It mostly does result in butthurt but mainly because people abuse it. For example down voting because they disagree or improper spelling was used. I can imagine this being used by mods who have a good eye for when and when not to down vote.

i dunno, i don't like only being able to like something. it is too new age-y and relentlessly positive for me. (this is also my main non-privacy-based complaint about facebook.) i need to be able to say that something sucks shit. i say if you can't do both just eliminate either option and we can go back to the good old days of talking shit instead of talking and voting it

I have no preference either way. 

If we only have upvoting, not upvoting someone means they will have a lower rating than if you had upvoted them.  You can express your negativity this way.
