When I have the time this thread is going to go NUTS.

Don't worry Dusto, our hemisphere disparity makes little difference in the concocting world.  We have access to the same ingredients at roughly the same prices.  Mind you, I have cheaper access to Australian and New Zealand hops, you have cheaper access to European and U.S. hops, but the rest is pretty similar.

concocting beer is EASY, CHEAP and GOOD FOR YOU.

:beerhorns:

Also, you can get started today with what you have in the kitchen.  You can also go out and blow $1000 on top of the range bling if you desire.  So many options!

TAM: When and what did you used to brew?

concocting beer is very cheap.  Hands down more affordable than buying beer, even in the US.A. where beer isn't taxed much.  concocting is also very easy.  It mostly involves waiting around and drinking your other beer.

I spend on average between $14 and $20 for every 23 litres of beer that I brew.  concocting this amount of beer takes me 3.5 hours including setting up and cleaning up.

If you do small batches on your stove top it takes even less time.  If you use malt extract like most new brewers do it takes even less time.  You can knock out a beer in 30 minutes with this method.  All you need is a stock pot, sanitiser and cling wrap.

I will post a picture tutorial here tomorrow.  It will be called "concocting the absolute easiest fucking possible way".

I will use American ingredients.

Then you can decide if you delve deeper.

Yes, they are called Cornelius (corny) kegs.  They are by far the most popular method of kegging beer for non-commercial brewers the world over.

However, for the Morbid Ale I will be concocting tonight for yinz all, we will keep things way, way, way simpler than that.

We use a turkey fryer to brew the beer. As far as ingredients, I couldn't tell you, my buddy always buys all the stuff. We've brewed a few batches of Cream stout that turned out good, a porter that turned out ok, A dubbel and a quadruple that turned out way too sweet, but very strong, an imperial stout that was fucked up and ended up being thrown out, and 1 or 2 other things that I can't remember.

and the last couple brews we've done the full grain mash whatever it's called thing, where we sparge the brew a couple times through a tub of grains.

We also have a big fat glass carboy that we used for initial fermentation. The secondary fermentation goes in a bucket that has a spout. How much do you brew in a brew? We do 5 gallon batches.

I do 20-27l (5-7 gallon) batches as all my fermenters are 25-30l capacity.  I have too many fermenters (five) but only use two or three for concocting.

I have two like this:

http://www.brewshop.co.nz/media/catalog ... el_30l.jpg

But I use these for storing dried pet food at the moment (one for the dog and one for the bunnies).

Then I have this little one:

http://media.supercheapauto.com.au/shar ... 131442.jpg

Which I use for small batches and cider.

Then I have two square, squarsh ones that I use for beer.  I bought these initially because the tall ones didn't fit well when I moved house:

https://2ecffd01e1ab3e9383f0-07db7b9624 ... e97735.jpg

However, everything will change for me fermentation-wise as soon I am buying a couple of these babies:

Image

My max batch in these will go down slightly to about 24l depending on ABV and krausen.

Ever since I starting concocting I have been slowly replacing all plastic equipment with either glass or stainless steel.  The fermenters are the last things to replace. The price difference is considerable though; a 30l plastic fermenter costs $25, the equivalent item in stainless is about $225.

I am concocting Pale Ale for my Dad's 50th birthday party in the shed.  I am drinking Bushmills in slippers and dancing to Ekseption.  It's raining outside and chicken is in the oven.  About to mash in and eat said poultry inside with my ladyfriend and the dog.  Whenever there is a big dash of rain the wind comes down the eastern wall and into the garage.  Brrrr.

i am in earnest. it is the new year, a time for experimentations and fun

on thursday, i will drive to fresno california, to take my wife to the airport so she can attend a conference. the conference is not at the airport

while in fresno, i will stock up on homebrew supplies, courtesy of this place: http://www.bencomoshomebrewsupply.com

then, i will return home, and make beer happen

this is my plan. point out any flaws
