'slam' type of death metal (usage of the term itself)
The term itself...do people actively use it? I can imagine this would be part of scunty's everyday vocabulary but what about the others?
Take this for example. It's a YouTube playlist of 'slam' death metal https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAp5V5bksShW1Grz0s3phyLcy90LROcyW
I usually just consider stuff like that to be simply 'brutal death metal' a.k.a. suffocation clones, some with a bit more steroids than the others. Also, I'm still somewhat partial to the term 'brutal death' so sometimes I'd just refer to them all as death metal.

I don't use it. Generally just refer to it as fruital death.

the term is so silly. I guess it's because some of that kind of style is more grooving or something?

Where the hell is smelly anyway?
Anyway... Devangelic, Disentomb, and the first Decrepit Birth record are my current favorites. And Disgorge, of course.

So does that mean most of the suffocation clones fall under the ‘slam’ category?

Re: 'slam' type of death metal (usage of the term itself)
I don't think so.
I think a band's entire sound has to be centered around slams to get called slam, like Epicardiectomy or Devourment.
Brodequin and Inveracity are fruital as shit and have a few slams here and there, but are by no means "slam" IMHO.
