it dawned on me that i've never watched anything from studio ghibli before so i went and watched grave of the fireflies a couple of nights ago. it's extremely good, as long as you're ok with being hit in the face with a bat made of highly-condensed sadness

"Sorry to Bother You" might be the first movie I plan to see in theaters in at least six years. I'm not convinced it's going to be amazing or anything, but for whatever reason when I saw the trailer I just kind of wanted to spend some more time in that little universe sooner than later.

Re: Recently watched movies
Watched "The Overnight" on Netflix just now. Nowhere near the type of movie I would ever think of spend time with, but I got a solid recommendation. It was pretty good, and I liked that it was only a little over and hour because that's all that was needed to tell the story. I wish that type of thing was done more often.
Each turn in the plot makes what the next one is going to be pretty obvious, but it was still enjoyable watching it play out. Seems like it could be wildly entertaining and doable as a live performance.

Re: Recently watched movies
The First Purge was the most recent of film viewing. I thought the concept was good but the story was lacking. Race war-esque politics don't seem to hold much value for top dollar movie revenue. At a b movie aspect it works ok'ish. I think that may have been the plan with the producer on this franchise. From what I hear this film is the best that is offered. Won't be seeing the others.

Re: Recently watched movies
I re-watched The Big Lebowski just now simply because the cast was interviewed for the 20th anniversary and one of them mentioned that someone brought up a theory that the character of Donnie is entirely in Walter's head. Aside from one brief exchange Donnie only communicates with Walter. The way I see it the theory doesn't quite work for a couple reasons, and if it did I think it would make the movie much less funny, but it was still interesting watching it with that in mind.

Re: Recently watched movies
i watched robocop maybe two three months ago
the overnight is a good film, i enjoyed it
i watched do the right thing today, only second time i had seen it. still one of the all time best american movies in my opinion
i've been rewatching a lot recently ... yellow sea stab stab stab
i saw RAW which was not bad, some very funny scenes but overall a little stretched-- could have been really good if they just edited it a little differently and it had a different ending, still one of the best cannibalism movies. actually does THE DESCENT count as cannibalism? i think so because they are homo sapien just troglodyte style, too much time out of the sun
what else i seen recently good question. ohhh SWEET COUNTRY, it was a not bad australian western. great for its politics and mise en scene, setting etc. but shitty script. still very few films like that so i give it a massive whollop of approval, ball squeeze. i watched CHOPPER which i had never seen, it's nearly twenty years old but i remember when it came out. it took eric bana from being a skit tv comedy hard-on bearer to being a hollywood hard-on bearer. aussie gangster movie. one of the best and a very different tone to most aust gangster film. i rewatched THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY and THE LONG GOODBYE both of which are FUCKING good films. highly recommend both. haven't seen too any UK gangster movies but the long good friday has to be seminal. i watched HOUNDS OF LOVE which was pretty disappointing given the director's first film was fun and metal as fuck. he lost his metal somewhere along the way. rewatched some more aussie films educating someone, muriel's wedding, strictly ballroom, priscilla, these early gloryhole era comedies i grew up with. classic movies as far as i am concerned and i am concerned. SUPER DARK TIMES was a very good film, i enjoyed that. i love that it followed through. it had me going for a second i.e. is he really losing it, is this overanxiety, what is this ... then the ending, fuck yes! hmm what else. can't remember

Re: Recently watched movies
I read the book quite a while ago, but had completely forgotten that I also watched the film (the one with Elliott Gould in case there are others) about eight years ago. Maybe I'll re-watch it. All I remember is that it was very different from the book, and that the main theme music kept resurfacing in very bizarre ways. Also the cat food sceneTHE LONG GOODBYE
I watched the new Coen Borther's film on Netflix a few days ago. It's about six 20-30 minute segments. They were all solid and seemed to have examined the Western film genre from all the major angles. I'll probably never watch the whole thing all the way through again, but I've already re-watched three of the scenes once or twice.
I remember reading an interview they did about ten years ago, and in part of it one or both of them began describing certain elements of what they would like to put in a western film. It all sounded really good, so I was pretty disappointed when True Grit came out and none of it was in there (I hadn't read the book). I think this is more of what they had in mind in that interview.

Re: Recently watched movies
last night i watched mandy, i was disappointed-- mainly because of the hype. i heard reviewers i respect going ape shit over it so when i finally saw it i was just a bit ... underwhelmed.
there was no metal, the synth was underutilised, it was waaay slower than i was hoping for. atmospheric yes, some genuinely funny moments, i enjoyed nic cage but ... it just felt like missed opportunities. didn't go bananas anywhere near enough

Great film that I think is as good if not better than the original. Bought it on prime the other day and picking it up the 29th on blu Ray for the special features

Re: Recently watched movies
I watched "The Disaster Artist" and didn't really care for it. Since the mysteries surrounding the movie weren't really addressed there wasn't really much of a compelling plot, and it generally seemed like an excuse for James Franco to do an impression of Tommy Wisseau.
The movie it's based on was funny for a one time watch, but to me the anecdotal stuff about the hard-on bearer behind it all was much funnier than a cinematic depiction of him. I can't remember why I came across the interview below, but I was much more entertained by it than the movie. The hard-on bearer talking is the person who actually directed the movie.
