USA election 2018.
I voted early on Friday evening - had to wait 45 minutes, in the rain. It was worth every second.
There was large number of younger folks (I'm 34, so younger than me) and quite a few Spanish speakers were in line with me (there is a sizable Puerto Rican population here). When I got up to get my ballot, I asked the poll worker if this was typical and the response was "no...not at all. usually the mid terms are fairly quiet during early voting - people can often walk right in and vote. this year, not so much."
gee, you know, I cannot possibly imagine what might have changed the last couple of years to encourage this. hmmmmmmmm......
Anyways, here’s hoping the Blue wave comes to pass. This country needs come back from the brink of insanity.

strictly speaking i don't necessarily need an ID, but massachusetts makes you recertify your voter registration every 6 months by sending in a thing they mail to you. it has to be received back within like ten days of it being sent out and i check my PO box once every month or two so i always miss it. they keep you on the voter rolls but you have to fill out a special form and present ID in order to get a ballot, which i've had to do every single time i've ever voted

Re: USA election 2018.
WV reelected joe manchin, the spineless democrat that voted for Kavanaugh (and DeVos) but only revealed his choice at the last minute when he was confirmed a definite win. If there was ever a case for the lesser of two evils theory being a load of horseshit, the shitshow of WV politics is it.

All they ask for is dob, address and full name when you walk in. Paper prints out, sign it and you are off to pretend like you matter!Hitoshura wrote:strictly speaking i don't necessarily need an ID, but massachusetts makes you recertify your voter registration every 6 months by sending in a thing they mail to you. it has to be received back within like ten days of it being sent out and i check my PO box once every month or two so i always miss it. they keep you on the voter rolls but you have to fill out a special form and present ID in order to get a ballot, which i've had to do every single time i've ever voted

Re: USA election 2018.
The problem with having an old, conservative generation voting is that they’re not voting for your future, but for theirs. And theirs is relatively much shorter than yours and your children’s. This is one of the caveats of democracy. A solution could be to have the elderly vote only on subjects that directly influence their lives and well-being.
We see the same problems in my country where the majority of our population is 60+ years old. They’re not helping the younger generation build a better future.
It’s even that bad that if everyone in my country at the age of 18 - 30 would vote, they would still be overshadowed by 50 - 60+.

Correct. Thays what is happening over here. Good news is that blue runs the Senate now and can now have more leverage over what the Republicant's can do.

Re: USA election 2018.
A better solution would be to make voting mandatory to get the substantial fraction of young people who regularly don't to actually participate. Only 1/3 millennials claim they would be 'definitely voting' in recent polls.iamgoat wrote:The problem with having an old, conservative generation voting is that they’re not voting for your future, but for theirs. It's also been funny/maddening watching these bourgeois armchair pseudo-revolutionary leftists eschew elections altogether on the internet because they're supposedly entirely useless. Totes why the hard right and their bootlicking supporters make such an effort in voter suppression and actively dissuade people from voting.

For sure! Young people complaining should go out and vote. Otherwise nothing will change for them.Lavabug wrote:A better solution would be to make voting mandatory to get the substantial fraction of young people who regularly don't to actually participate. Re: USA election 2018.
apparently the race for Florida Governor and Senate is still up in the air.
Governor
6,105 of 6,105 precincts reporting
Name Party Pct Votes
Ron Desantis REP 49.6% 4,069,451
Andrew Gillum DEM 49.2% 4,030,936
United States Senator
6,111 of 6,111 precincts reporting
Name Party Pct Votes
Rick Scott REP 50.1% 4,091,417
Bill Nelson DEM 49.9% 4,074,073
anything with a .5% or less difference is subject to an automatic recount. initially they claimed Desantis won the Governor but now that has yet to be confirmed. the Senate was never declared.
interesting times. It's also scary how many people still vote for republicans in the state but with all the old people I shouldn't be surprised. there are 12 million eligible voters in Florida. over 8 million voted, or 66.6%

If a candidate in Wisconsin is losing by less than 1 percent, they can ask for a recount — but Walker lost by 1.2 percent.
Business Insider reports that the threshold is due to a law Walker signed after President bag of diarrhea inside another, bigger bag of diarrhea was elected. Mr. bag of diarrhea inside another, bigger bag of diarrhea won Wisconsin by 23,000 votes, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who received just 1 percent of the vote, demanded and received a recount, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. In response, the state legislature passed a measure mandating that in the future, candidates could only request a recount if they were losing by less than 1 percent.
Therefore, Walker did not qualify for a recount, like his lieutenant governor initially suggested when the race was too close to call. Walker ultimately called Evers to concede.
