postal benefits should be much better than Walmart though so I imagine your total compensation will go up even if the wage is on par
that should be a union job too at least until the next session when the SC rules unions unconstitutional and membership is punishable by death

They called me for an interview but said it was for a part time position
I know when I applied it said full. He said he’d keep my application and exam score on file if a FT position opens

I work with someone who transferred from Fargo, and I saw that they're hiring full-time dock. If you want I could ask him if the operation in Fargo is something worth getting into. I know that terminal used to be a dump, but they moved to a new (or at least newer) place a few years ago.jorsh wrote:They called me for an interview but said it was for a part time position

Re: passed the postal exam
I think it starts at $20 per hour and tops out at about $25, with time and a half after eight hours. Pretty sure it starts off with one week of paid vacation and tops out at about five weeks, plus seven paid holidays. The attendance policy is also very lenient, so calling off generally isn't an issue if you space it out enough.
Insurance is so-so, but only costs a couple dollars per week. Pretty easy work once you get the hang of it. And since almost everything Fargo gets goes through MSP I know for a fact that it's loaded relatively well.
Not sure what the hours would be. I know Fargo delivers a fair amount of freight within its zip codes (that would be early morning) but it is also a hub that services Minot, Bismark, Winnipeg and Grand Forks. That part of the operation would probably be around 10 PM, but I don't think there would be a whole lot of work to go around for it. I can ask.

Re: passed the postal exam
I asked about the Fargo terminal and he said the service center manager there is a really great hard-on bearer, and he described the dock crew as a tightly nit group with a strong work ethic. If true that's definitely a plus because given the nature of the job even a couple slackers can create a lot of unnecessary extra work for everyone else. As long as the dock supervisors aren't dicks it sounded like an easygoing place.
As far as hours he said he would expect full time dock to have a start time of 1AM, but I find that hard to believe. I know Fargo receives much more freight than it sends out, but I would imagine there's enough picked up from the city to justify at least a couple start times closer to 4 or 5PM. After that point there would be a few trailers from MSP and possibly KCY with freight that would need to be loaded into trailers going directly to Bismark, Minot, etc.
Other than that it's the type of job that people either seem to love or hate. For me not dealing with any customers is the biggest plus. It is time sensitive work and there are cut times, but it's generally not an issue if you stay on task and work at a steady pace. There's a metric they use for hourly production, and at my center they want 6. I easily get 10 without much effort, so it's reasonable. If you miss goal you'll probably never even hear about it. There is also occasionally some ugly/tipped over freight, but as long as it isn't a chem spill the worst is usually just having to re-stack some boxes. There is also a bonus directly related to damage claims (profit margin) and it pays out twice per year. After taxes it usually works out to a couple days worth of work per check. Nothing special but hard to complain about.
I forgot to ask him if the Fargo terminal is heated. I'm pretty sure it's not. MSP isn't and it's really not that bad as long as you dress for it. Plus Fargo has gas lifts and an insulated roof, which makes a big difference.
If you're genuinely interested he said he could pass your name along to the service center manager, although since I have no idea how you would do in this line of work it seems a little strange to be recommending you But they do generally give preference to new hires who were told about the job opening by a current employee.
