Biking and Hiking metal punks

Post by crumbswamkghoshthber »

Here's a little corner where we can post some pretty pictures and accounts from days out on the trail   :dutch: :redpanda:

This Friday gone I had added incentive to get out of the house at 6am and catch a train to Shrewsbury with my bike, the highlight of the day being a partial solar eclipse which fitted in nicely with a few straightforward low level hills. I found a good viewpoint on Harmer Hill to watch the shadows slowly creep across the land. It was quite a surreal moment in the dusklike conditions as the partial eclipse reached its maximum and through some trees I could see the sun as a thin crescent if I squinted hard enough.

SL373405.JPG

SL373409.JPG

After that I headed over to Grinshill Hill which was just under 200m but had an superb outlook over the Shropshire plain, with some fine rugged sandstone outcrops to peer down from. It warmed up nicely again here while the sun started shining full power once more as I ate my tuna butty v.ery contentedly.

SL373410.JPG

I had a few more hours cycling around after that to get to my return station which wound the day down v.ery finely through some gentle countryside.

SL373411.JPG

All in all it was a quaint and pleasant trip out in a v.ery 'English' landscape. As the year goes on though I do hope to put in some hikes through much wilder and remote surroundings.

Just so happened to be out on a big bike hike myself last Friday. Exploring the stunning landscape around Llangynog, North Powys. Quite a memorable day indeed :cigar:

Wales is certainly not short of amazing, grandiose landscapes, but this particular area is a v.ery special place in its own. It is way quieter than the Snowdonia National Park to the west, where everyone is drawn to the highest peaks and honeypot villages. The eastern Berwyn lands have a great sense of wilderness about them and most days you'll have the hills all to yourself. Not another person in sight except maybe a distant farmer working the hillside. Whenever I head over that way it never fails to impress and there's always something unique and unexpected that you'll find out there along the way.

For the pine saplings in the top photo, it's new generation replanted forest. It would have been clear felled anything up to ten years ago. You can just make out some of the brash at the bottom of the picture which is the remains of the old forest. All the useless old branches, entangled with brambles and hidden holes. Horrendous ground to walk over :oldryan: . But, it's all part of the experience of getting yourself out into the back country and navigating yourself through whatever you might encounter along the way to your chosen points of interest :llama:.

I went to the Lakes last month, this was the view just before the clouds blew in and reduced viability somewhat.

So, as with everyone else over the past couple of months, I have been restricted lately to only local wanders out from the front door. Makes you really grateful at times like this living near the seaside, and having some great scenery to hand into the bargain. This April just gone was one of the sunniest here since records started. Definitely has been no shortage of absolutely gorgeous sunsets going, very much more often than not. Here's one of my nearby fave viewpoints, Little Orme's Head looking over Llandudno Bay, on a quick outing a week or so ago.
Stay local. Stay well. And stay fukkin' metal :xx:

A few snaps from my last trip away from home, just prior to lockdown. Mid Wales. Very very peaceful and isolated. As soon as restrictions start easing, at whatever point, it won't be long before I'm planning myself another quick jaunt over that way :dizzy:

Hi :santa:

Had a nice 3.5 hour spur of the moment wander on Sunday. Just around and about on country lanes, but it was all very pleasant  Was one of the hottest days of the year and I had super clear long distance views out over the coast. Could see the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland well over 70 miles off :mmno: Very rare that you can see that far. On the way back I saw one of my pals cycling past and we stopped for a quick chat.

Just plain simple things but you appreciate 'em all way way more right now.

If I can unsard I might bike-hike it up to some decent hills next week :serenity:

Never made it over to the high ground this week just gone but did get in a few pleasant local wanders. Mood here is that the time's coming to start venturing out again slightly further afield but just don't be a dumbass with the that places you're frequenting. :squarsh:

The landscape of Wales isn't of such that it stands out in it's own particular way, but what it does have is an endearing quaintness throughout. Just generally very quiet green rolling hills for the main part. Here's a typical view below, one of my favourites from a few years ago overlooking the Usk valley :rocker:

I think I caught it at work but wasn't feeling the symptoms, went on a camp and long walk and maybe that was enough to bring out the symptoms

I'm alright now but I just had no energy or appetite up until today, been sleeping 12-14 hours a night since Saturday
