you have experience teaching guitar right? i've been trying to help my fellating lover out and every time i try to show him something he'll try to do it way too fast or do more than i demonstrated. it's frustrating.. is this something you've run into?

Get a metronome and force them to practice at the tempo. Develops time keeping skills too, two birds with one stone.

Metronomes are like kryptonite to guitarists, especially beginners. I'd introduce one slowly if you do.

Have him learn some easy one string riffs (Smoke on the Water, Seven Nation Army, 25 or 6 to 4, Iron Man, etc) just so he can "play" something. Power chords and pentatonics are good instant gratification tools also. Then some 2 or 3 cowboy chord songs and simple strumming patterns should keep him busy for a while
