the fucked up thing is this is the second instance where a communist from providence apparently found me so utterly repellent, she swore off traditional dating entirely to become a poly person. i don't know if i'm ever going to recover from this one, jesus christ

i think i would probably be better off with a liberal. i don't respect either tendency, but i can kind of understand choosing US liberalism because it's 50% of the officially-acceptable positions. there is a heavy price associated with deviating from that universe of ideas! if you are going to incur it, you should probably aim a little higher than the bedtime abolition caucus.

youtube would have me believe that there are two groups in america

1. love jesus, love guns, hate abortions

2. care way too much about the environment, throw words like "racist" and "transphobe" and "sexist" around rather than articulate an argument, and aggressively pro abortion

You're referring to a minority of loudmouth idiots that dominate headlines because turning the nightly news into a reality TV show apparently sells ads.

As far as I can tell the vast majority of adults either have no strong opinion on the trivial divide and conquer issues mass media won't shut up about, or they consider what's going on and strike a nuanced outlook on things and go from there. So to state the obvious: the U.S. isn't a nation of Westboro church goers vs. purple haired transgender first graders.

I'm Paste Human, and I approve this message :santa:

i do remember

i also remember the first time i really started watching videos online, seven years before youtube. in 1998 i would log on to the goldeneye 007 N64 websites through the classroom computer and watch the speed runs people would put online (3-4MB each), then when i got home i would try to perfect them. my obsession with goldeneye led to perfect dark, which led to pd64.com, which led to nintensity.com, which led me to mabb. a direct route

the only way i watched videos online pre-youtube was mostly downloading music videos thru kazaa or whatever. i don't remember a lot of video watchery pre-youtube. oh i just remembered, around 2004-2005 you could stream videos through winamp, there was even a few porn channels :redneck:

i was downloading mad VCD rips in the pre-youtube days. i had a bootleg copy of the second star wars prequel, i can't remember if that was circulated ahead of the theatrical or home release but it was definitely early.

Same here. On WinMX I would sometimes send a message to the uploader asking if they could do me a favor and stay online so I could get the entire album/video in one go. Even with cable internet this was still sometimes necessary back then, and took all night in some cases.

A lot of it was due to searching for long out of print albums that almost no one was sharing. Atheist's Unquestionable Presence might have been the most frustrating to find before it was finally reissued. It was so expensive on eBay that Kelly Shaefer couldn't afford to buy a replacement copy after he lost the only copy he had, which is pretty crazy if you think about it.

also, if you ignore every idiot talking to the camera on youtube you can avoid a lot stupidity in your life.

as Paste said, these people are a minority in society, don't let them think that any of their opinions are held by the majority. :santa:

I remember searching through user's lists on IRC looking for metal albums and videos. got in to quite a few bands just by downloading a single track and then committing to the rest after liking what I heard. I had dialup then but even on DSL shit would take forever to download. the worst was when you would get most of a file or album but the user signed off at some point (or your internet went out) and you'd have to wait for them to come back on to finish.

my first MA was rapture on napster

back then i would download one or two tracks and go out and buy the album if i liked it because dialup + lack of availability made full album downloads impractical
