broker was sold out so we saw zone of interest instead. it was really superb, but we had to see it at an AMC and so it was bracketed by the nicole kidman movie magic ad and also exiting into an AMC lobby which added an incredibly disorienting and surreal aspect to the experience

Re: Now Watching
Saw Love Lies Bleeding over the weekend. It was pretty solid, and I really dug how the relationships between characters are slowly revealed. Too much too soon and things wouldn't have been as impactful.
The last ~5 min were a: huh: CGI fest that kind of detailed things a bit. However the cast was great, and I liked the overall tone/style of the film.

Poor things

This seems to be a good period for movies, much to pick from

Re: Now Watching
The contrast between common family life and the slaughter of humans just across the wall is bizarre. Someone told me he thought it was boring and I think that is just the point. Just daily life for a nazi, nothing horrible. Rudolf gets ready for work, the kids go to school. You hear some sounds from across the wall Interesting from a historic point of view, I know a little more. And I spot a cinematic novelty, dream scenes from one of the children (I think) in a dreamy kind of way. Poor kids, imagine how fucked up growing up next to Auschwitz would be. I would just watch it

Re: Now Watching
i can't imagine being bored through that! but yeah, there's a big element of capturing arendt's idea of the banality of evil in a way that is (or certainly should be) legible to modern office-dwellers and comfortable suburbanites. and the sound design was really incredible of course. i've heard complaints that it didn't give enough attention to the victims and i find it a really confusing criticism. beyond the obvious, numerous and jarring sound cues, the film is very deliberate in showing that the slaughter suffuses the whole world - it's in the air they breathe, it litters the streams, it is the source of their whole life - it literally fertilizes the gardens!
did you know jonathan glazer got his start doing music videos? my fellating lover found a playlist with all of his stuff, he did the jamiroquai video and a bunch of other notable ones

Let me know how it is. Want to check it out next weekend.
Rewatched hereditary and the witch today with the cousin as he’s seen neither of them
We then watched Spaceman on Netflix with Adam Sandler. Weird ass flick. I dug it though.

It was...ok. I feel like there's a better movie hidden in there somewhere, but it got lost in a jumble of ideas. There were things I wanted it to lean harder into and it just didn't. It wasn't bad, just not what I thought it made itself out to be.droidspawn wrote: ↑01 Apr 2024, 09:17Let me know how it is. Want to check it out next weekend.

Re: Now Watching
Watched these guys today:
Glengarry Glen Ross
Bad Words
I'd never actually seen the former all the way through for some reason and highly enjoyed it. Very solid performances by everyone. You really felt for Jack Lemmon's character. 8/10
The latter was great times in the vein of Bad Santa. The story was predictable, and some parts were sappy, but I wasn't expecting anything mind-bending. It had me laughing out loud several times. 6.8/10

Was showing both to my buddy who was not a fan of either. Both are niche classics but def not for everyone.
I am not into jaws, king kong, godzilla most kaiju or monster films but love dark comedy esp when mixed with over the top violence and psychological movies in general.

i've not seen it, or anything from kitano i don't think. but preliminary research indicates kubi hasn't been picked up for distribution, so i don't think anyone's seen it outside of the festival circuit or the japanese theatrical run

Re: Now Watching
not to defend gamers because by and large they're all insufferable babies, but i am a little sympathetic here. exploiting a franchise to build an audience in and then shitting all over the source material is maybe worthy of a little criticism or scorn. i don't have a horse in this particular race, but i still think it's shitty to see the contempt that game publishers have for their audiences (and bethesda is far and away one of the worst offenders on this count) creep into spheres outside of the games themselves.
